RICS To Host Hurricane Simulation Panel

November 3, 2014

Bermuda RICS Property Forums is getting set to host a panel presentation on hurricane simulation models, wind tunnels, and wind climate analysis in the design for storm loading on structures and buildings on November 6, 2014 at 6.00pm at RBYC, Albouy’s Point, Hamilton.

Speakers at the event will include architect Sjur Linberg with an introduction, along with Dr. Eric Ho and Dr. Tom Mara, of the Davenport Wind Engineering Lab at University of Western Ontario, Keith Hodgkins , a Structural Engineer with #141 Front Street, and Dr. Mark Guishard, of the Bermuda BIOS and Risk Prediction Initiative.

The event flyer says, “Insurance professionals, contractors, property owners, industry professionals, and the general public are invited to attend an informative discussion of the design challenges and solutions for Hurricanes storm wind loadings on new buildings.

“Dr. Ho is a Director at The Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory and an Adjunct Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Eric Ho is a wind engineering expert with 20 years of experience working on more than 200 wind engineering projects on tall buildings, bridges, low buildings and transmission line systems.

“He is very active in the development of the wind tunnel methodologies for design applications.

“Dr. Tom Mara is a Research Engineer at the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory at the University of Western Ontario. His experience includes tall and low-rise buildings, wind hazard assessment, lattice transmission and communication towers, industrial chimneys and stacks, and aerodynamics of bridges.

“He is presently active with the ASCE Task Committee on Electrical Transmission Line Structural Loading and the ASCE Structural Wind Engineering Committee. Dr. Mara is a registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.

“Mr. Guishard a qualified meteorologist, with 15 years experience in the Bermuda Weather Service, six of those as its Director. His research into Atlantic hurricanes and subtropical storms led him to obtain a PhD in Meteorology from Penn State University, following a Masters degree from the University of East Anglia.

“Mark has experience as an operational forecaster with training from the UK Met Office and the US National Hurricane Center.”

Registration for the event costs $10, payable at the door; Certificates for Professional [CPD] are available with registration. To reserve your place, RSVP to info@horsfieldproperty.bm.
