Team Hurricane Reveals Basketball Programs
Team Hurricane Basketball Academy has revealed two new programs for its 2014-2015 season, one focused on academics and another focused on athletics.
A spokesperson said, “On the academic front, to ensure that scholar athletes develop academically and socially while honing their competitive skills in basketball, Team Hurricane Basketball Academy has launched the Students First Educational Program.
“Team Hurricane’s Students First Educational Program is organized and overseen by Registered Psychologist Dr. Mellisa Gibbons Tankard of HARTT Services and former Project Director of Higher Achievers Afterschool Program in Washington DC.”
Ms. Tankard said, “Consistent with established programs that focus on developing the scholar athlete, Students First provides direct academic assistance for students in the form of academic screening, individualized tutoring and guidance towards other professionals that can assist with their long term career goals on and off the basketball court.
“This program has merit and potential and can assist Team Hurricane coaches with providing updated information as to the overall potential of the student when recruiters express interest in a player.
“The goal of Students First is to also help the student-athlete realize there is a world beyond playing basketball in Bermuda.”
The program has already had a positive impact on Team Hurricane’s student-athletes, with Yontz Sutton saying, “I like that it’s one-on-one and focuses on what the individual student needs.”
“The program helps further my skills for higher education,” said Zachary Johnson.
“On the athletic side, in keeping with its mission to provide the best competitive basketball experience for student-athletes who want to pursue a college education, Team Hurricane is aligning with Alexander Basketball Academy to hold the Team Hurricane-Global Squad Invitational Skills Camp.
“The fostering of such relationships serves to benefit Bermuda’s student-athletes as Team Hurricane works with other basketball academies experienced in bringing international players to U.S. college coaches.
“Alexander Basketball Academy [ABA] is a basketball training organization dedicated to helping international athletes achieve their basketball related goals and reach the next level. For nearly 10 years ABA players have reached their highest potential by utilizing cutting-edge training techniques and a distinctive coaching style that stresses physical improvement, mental growth, and leadership.”
Team Hurricane 2014-2015
“Alexander Basketball Academy is led by John Alexander. John played four years of college basketball at Washington College [Chestertown, Maryland] where he was captain and three time Defensive Player of the Year.
“Planned for the weekend of April 10, 2015 at Bermuda College, the main objective of the Team Hurricane – Global Squad Invitational Skills Camp will be to teach players how to develop their individual basketball skills whether on their own or with a small group of friends.
“Student-athletes will learn fundamental training techniques including proper footwork, speed, agility, ball-handling, and shooting. At camps end players will have the tools necessary to train at a high level regardless of where they live or the facilities at their disposal.
“Just as importantly, the camp seeks to identify those student-athletes with the talent to play college basketball in the United States.
The Team Hurricane-Global Squad Invitational Skills Camp will feature experienced coaches, including staff with many years of basketball skill development, providing focused instruction, with a high player to coach ratio. Athletes will receive pro-style training with NBA caliber drills, so athletes can practice like the pros, and a high level of competition, with daily challenges with recognition for excellence.”
Founder and Head Coach Doug Reed said, “These programs allow Team Hurricane Basketball Academy to continue to provide a platform in which student-athletes can train, develop and reach their academic and athletic potential.
“These new programs also reflect the continued growth of the program and of its student-athletes. I love the team’s camaraderie and the way these young men compete and conduct themselves on and off the court.
“Currently, Team Hurricane participates in the Bermuda College Men’s League with a roster of only high school players, which is a testament to their competitive spirit and skill level. With one week to go in the season, I encourage people to come out Tuesday evening and watch the confident, tenacious way this young Hurricane team competes against adult competition.
“You’ll find that we play an exciting, yet disciplined style of basketball.
“We continue to model this program as a grassroots effort which seeks to build young people of integrity. We do this at no charge to our players and their families.
“As a result, I wish to thank Orbis, the Argus Group, Jardine Matheson International Services, ABWilson Photography and our individual donors for their support because it allows Team Hurricane to continue to develop the youth of Bermuda through sports and education.”
