Causeway Mabey Bridges Temporary Closure

March 5, 2015

The Ministry of Public Works is advising the public that a temporary lane closure will take place on the two Mabey Bridges situated at the eastern end of the Causeway on Sunday, March 8, 2015 from 6.30am until 11.30am.

A spokesperson said, “The purpose of the lane closure is to enable Ministry of Public Works personnel to replace and tighten several bolts securing the deck panels on both Mabey Bridges. During the temporary lane closure all traffic will be diverted onto one of the Mabey Bridges in single file under manual traffic control.

“In the event of inclement weather or sea conditions this work will be carried out on the following Sunday, (March 15, at the same time).

“The Ministry of Public Works wishes to encourage the full cooperation of the motoring public and apologizes for any inconvenience that may result.”

  1. Temporary closure of the temporary bridge. I love my country.

  2. Micro says:

Should look towards a more permanate solution. The idea of a temporary bridge is that its temporary, have the brilliant engineers at at Works been testing the bridges for their soundness? Metal fatigue is often a well hidden danger until a catastrophic failure occurs.

    • Orf Deilun says:

The public submitted bridge designs about 10 – 15 years ago during a contest, I think. Where are they?

      What about a tunnel?

  3. Tom Cooke says:

Those bridges are an embarrassment to us all… tell you what let’s spend 300 million and let’s get a new one with an airport terminal thrown in for free…

    • mike says:

That should have been part of the deal.

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Yep, you get off the plane, eventually get your bags & out the door & into a deluxe taxi & the first thing you cross is a third world bridge.

Whatever happened to the new causeway the PLP said they were going to build over & over? All we got is talk.

How difficult is it to build a bridge with the road level high enough for storm seas to pass under & a section across the channel high enough for any of the motor tourboats & ferrys to pass under?

    • Raymond Ray says:

      @ Tom Cooke
I agree 100% with you; the temp. bridge and Longbird Bridge are an embarrassment to us all…”tell you what let’s spend 300 million and let’s get a new one with an airport terminal thrown in for free.”
It would be appropriate if one were to be built simultaneously…A high spanning bridge were-by vessels of x’amount feet in height can navigate avoiding having to deal with the continuous problems of rust, breakdown and of course hurricanes :-(

  4. sandgrownan says:

You can absolutely thank Jennifer Smith for that problem.

    • Red says:

I recall Ross Perot offering to build a bridge replacing the old Long Bird bridge….his offer was refused by a prior government. If I’m wrong please correct me

  5. Sky Pilot says:

These bridges should have been replaced years ago with a proper bridge, but the plp decided their family and friends needed money instead.

  6. Lick My Chicken says:

time the new bridge is built ill be in my second life as a chicken.

  7. OB One says:

Mabey bridges? Is that because they maybe there still there in another 10 years. I think they should be refered to as Bailey bridges if i am not mistaken

  8. Rockfish#2 says:

Don’t be surprised if the decision is reversed and the bridge remains open!

  9. jt says:

    Mabey.

  10. Y-Gurl says:

Temporary in W&E terms probably means it will re open in 2017 and cost ten times what it should and have a fleet of well appointed tinted pick up trucks parked up on the site….no waste here move along!

  11. Terry says:

    “Mabey”?

Mabey OBA should get this one right.

    Reminds me of a song………

    Bermuda is a Mabey World…. 7 bridges at sea……………………….

  12. Baileysbay says:

    Mabey bridge;
Mabey it’s temporary, mabey we’ll get across it, mabey we’ll build new one day, mabey…..

  13. Ed Case says:

Thank goodness those lego bridges are only temporary – I mean just imagine if they were there permanently. Oh wait…

  14. somuchless says:

This would be a great time for someone to start a water shuttle. It mabey temporary but at the rate that their going I have other thoughts. Lol

    • Triangle Drifter says:

My drifting around online last night took me to a few places that have landing craft. Hmmmm……mabey….just maybey. Maybey needing such a vessel down there if the Causeway is not replaced before too long.

Ro Ro ferries would work just fine too. Been on a few of those. Big ones, little ones. No need to even get out of the vehicle.

  15. Ed Case says:

The only thing wrong with the old bridge is it won’t open for boats. So why not just use the old bridge and not open it?

Too simple I guess. Instead the PLP put in temporary lego bridges – and that was 8 years ago right? But that’s Ok cos they have a 5 years life. Oh well no problem.

No problem until one of them gives way under the weight of an oversized truck. Then you’ll see action.

That’s right then there will be traffic lights there ‘temporarily’ like on Marsh Folly.

  16. Just a View says:

12 years on and no permanent solution for this bridge but a multimillion dollar airport is on thr cards. Go figure.

  17. David says:

it’s a Bailey Bridge. mabey is a company that builds bridges.
and all this on the internet.

  18. Keepin' it Real!...4Real! says:

i will finance a new bridge for you…i will also install a toll booth to collect my money back…is it a deal..?

    • Triangle Drifter says:

There you go. Any idea what the toll would have to be to make it viable? $5 per axle? $10 per axle. A charge in one way only? You want to install an E-Z Pass system?

  19. Charlly X says:

Lol maybe we should just keep micen n vait till De hole causevay crumbles ?? Well we will see !! Its definitely a beautiful first view of the island !
Funny thing though that’s not the only bridge that needs repair ! As a people our bridges need replacing ! Its manifesting in our society obviously! The way we continue to grumble we will crumble . We need to fix the bridge between the Two Bermuda’s !!!
