2 Hour Video: PLP Town Hall On Budget Reply

March 5, 2015

Shadow Finance Minister David Burt delivered the Opposition’s Reply to the Budget last week in the House of Assembly and on Tuesday night [March 3], he hosted a Town Hall Meeting at T.N. Tatem Middle School in Warwick where the Shadow Minister spoke of the PLP’s vision for Bermuda’s economic future.

In his Reply to the Budget, Mr. Burt said, “There are no easy decisions going forward. As the government in waiting, we know that we cannot be all things to all people and we are prepared to make the tough choices that are necessary to build a better future for Bermuda.

“The situation at hand requires ideas and a vision for the future. Short term fixes and short-term stimulus are not enough. What we require is a fundamental transformation of our economy; and on that measure, again, the One Bermuda Alliance Budget has come up short.

“In this response we have raised many issues and ideas – some are simple, others are sure to generate controversy – but all have been raised with the goal of making Bermuda a better place for all Bermudians.”

Vision is all we got and all we would ever get.

Action…not so much. Unless it was/is a benefit to someone they like(d).

      • C James says:

He has a sort of ‘Sinatra’ look about him – he could very well be singing, “Strangers in the night, da da da da da, doo be doo be doo…”

“…..And PLP will fight, like strangers in…..the night”.

        • BETTTY TRUMP says:

Thanks MP Bean for such a brilliant presentation. a young man of your intelligence will go along way. i am very impressed. Well done!!!

          • Creamy says:

I DARE U.B.P to call a snap election. They would need all the eligible Status votes to get back in, oh and the bamboozled Surrogates too.

Mockingay: Because RLP could do so much better right? HAHAHAHAHAHA

      • hmmm says:

It’s not about power, it’s about Bermuda. When are yo going to see that. you are so diven by hate and hate only destroys.

Do you want to destroy Bermuda? Is that your mission?

        • Impressive says:

hate??? Take at the look at the comments written on this very same website from posters towards members and supporters of the PLP on a daily basis.. I agree with you that hate destroys, but it works both ways. I don’t see many PLP supporters attacking and disrespecting OBA supporters that often. I am not saying that it doesn’t happen at all, and if it does I don’t condone it, but the majority of the hate is directed the other way.. thank you

          • hmmm says:

            Where ?

            • Impressive says:

                    • another day in ......... says:

not long, maybe a few days, I will put together a file of all the comments that support my argument going forward.. If normal service continues, it shouldn’t take long to provide you with a convincing enough document in a few days.. have a blessed weekend. now i am going home to relax like the lump of wood you likened Mr. Burt to ;-)

          • Creamy says:

You’ve never read Mokingjay’s posts then?

      • Onion says:

The UBP can’t call a snap election because they’re all in the PLP now.

      • God 1st says:

I Like my economic future ,so I will be voting for the O.B.A

      • Purple Koolaid says:

@Mockingjay…personally I would prefer the UBP than the PLP. When the UBP were in power – anyone and I mean anyone that wanted a job had one, and there were choices. We had no debt when they finished as a party and we as a country had money in the bank. Lets not forget that UBP also dealt with a recession and dealt with it responsibly. What did the PLP leave us with? Massive debt, unemployment, the worst Tourism figures since the Sea Venture, an education system that was in disarray, unaccounted for public money, an over inflated government workforce, an infrastructure that is in shambles, questionable building contract (Berkely, TCD, Bda Emissions, Dockyard Pier), the Grand Atlantic Empty Condo project, Tuckers Point SDO, companies leaving Bermuda and much more.

And yet you still defend them. Just a guess here but I’m thinking that you or a family member must be a PLP politician. Am I right?

      • God 1st says:

I dare you to create some jobs …..

  4. swing voter says:

I think there would be no difference in how either party will handle finances right now. either cut to show lenders you are serious or borrow from the IMF.

    • Onion says:

The problem became acute in 2008. The PLP’s response was to pretend to cut budgets, attack those who sounded the alarm, and try to spin it as a good thing. They ran their largest ever deficit in 2012 ($408 million).

The PLP’s solution was to keep doing what they were doing until they hit a financial wall in 2016 and had to lay off thousands. David Burt virtually promised that outcome before the 2012 election by promising not to cut spending for 3 years.

  5. Truth is killin' me... says:

“We had to deceive you” nuff said. By any means necessary to gain power. Telling the people what they WANT to hear…not what they NEED to hear.

    • Raymond Ray says:

Them that are considered being “Leaders” of the Opposition Party, (P.L.P.) know only too well that, “a promise will keep a fool content.”

  6. Burt & Bean….Yes I USED TO VOTE PLP……. Never again, nor will my ENTIRE FAMILY or closes friends….. Waste of time …..

  7. Huh says:

Lest we forget, 1998 – 2012, 14 years of PLP economic chaotic overspending, $100 million per year for foreign consultants, Global Hue, etc.

    • swing voter says:

The electorate wanted 14yrs of borrow & spend. Now we’re stuck with the bill. Sad part is some will never admit it, mortgage called, job loss (private sector), children back in public system, 1 trip every 2 yrs….we had to deceive you!

    • watching says:

Not hardly 14 years. Be critical all you want, but be honest and don’t make up things.

  8. watching says:

Well done Mr Burt and PLP!

    • hmmm says:

      huh? Why, it’s snake oil.

      • BETTTY TRUMP says:

Thanks, Thanks for the excellent comments by “Just a Matter of Time” and “Impressive”…….MP Burt is indeed a Brilliant young man. He presented some good ideas to grow Bermuda Economy. Well done Mr. Burt keep standing strong.

he presented some excellent ideas to grow Bermuda’s

  9. Just a matter of time says:

MP Burt ran circles around Minister Richards when he was on Let’s Talk. He knew his stuff. Min Richards could only smirk, be arrogant acting as if everybody else is stupid and fluff his way through with no plan but to cut. That’s all he seemed to know. Nothing else mattered. No vision to grow the economy. No fresh ideas. Nothing MP Burt said cannot be disputed. He even admitted some failed policies of the past administration (Immigration policy). He has a fresh energy the country needs. He is the only one trying to sound the horn to embrace fresh ideas for Bermuda as as a whole. The only one. Not behind the scenes negotiations where we find out after the fact like AC35 where no one still knows how this is going to operate yet huge $$ will be spent, lack of transparency and RFP process with dubious connectins with the Airport, Jetgate, PRC, Immigration policy, PTB, Recycling, and other knee jerk measures without any vision, the Ag Show debacle…on and on. No strategy. No vision. Just knee jerk. When they take the time to think things through rather than rushing to make the numbers look good for 2015/16, it has to be pulled back when they realize what’s really involved…hence more borrowing. Cowboy mentality.

Had the OBA been in Govt since 2007 when things were crashing all around they would have had to borrow as well, as they are doing now, point blank because we were showing deficits then. And don’t come at me regarding civil servants. You can’t scapegoat civil servants yet support with concessions continually in automatic perpetuity with no accountability. How do we know if these concessions are the right numbers or not that are given to these businesses? No discussion there on a case by case. The Premier talks about ‘pilfering’ yet we hear nothing about these so-called past misdeeds from the last administration. If there was let’s hear it. Call them out. Get the arrests warrants signed. Why nothing after all this time? Let’s get this over with for goodness sakes you’ve had plenty of time to look under the hood since 2012. We are now in 2015 and we’re still hearing about pilfering. Pilfering?? A real strong word Mr. Premier considering there is some real questionable dealing with the airport and Somers Construction being involved with this. Did the Accountant General know this BEFORE he waived the all important RFP process to enable this MOU for that Canadian company?? 20/20 vision is so easily a hindsight but fear and scaremongering for real change like Minister Richards rather than having a proper national conversation about fresh ideas that MP Burt is attempting to do is a terrible thing. Minister Richards has only had one townhall and then chickened out when he could’t take the heat. FYI Minister Richards. The people already know about the debt situation and the deficits ad nauseum. They can probably write a dissertion on it as it has been discussed at length. We get it. We know. Let’s move on to ideas now.

    • hmmm says:

Oh please…the guy didn’t ever use the time value of money in his numbers presented previously. He has as much financial sense as a lump of wood.

    • Trulytruly says:

I strongly disagree. Bob Richards runs circles around that young man you like so much. Bob Richards is the right man for finance minister right now. It is just a matter of time before you realize we are all very fortunate to have this man navigating all of us through this very difficult era.

    • Impressive says:

Great Post, and so many dislikes for taking the conversation from the normal rhetoric of the PLP being at fault for everything that is wrong with Bermuda.. yawnnnn

    • Unearthed says:

Just a matter of time… That was good reading..

  10. God 1st says:

The PLP is not in Charge of my economic future !

  11. Just a matter of time says:

Lions and tigers and 48 Dislikes..! Oh my! Some really can’t handle the truth which is what I will always speak.

    • hmmm says:

The truth you speak of is imagery…some folks can look amazing on camera and sound fantastic on stage….that just makes them a great actor, not a great finance minister.

    • Lebron says:

Your truth. Unfortunately everyone else sees it differently.

How’s that imaginary friend, and Arsenal winning trophies?

  12. Navin Johnson says:

Looks like the likes and dislikes show Mr Burt what the PLP a chances are as a government in waiting..the new slogan so silly…shame they don’t must slink away…..

  13. Impressive says:

What I find so interesting, yet disheartening, is that in situations such as these where we have a PLP Shadow Minister providing a detailed and extensively researched presentation on how things could be improved, or done in a more efficient or competent manner, if you wish, you have the same OBA supporters attacking the person and not the points that are being raised.

I find it so immature and irrational. Most of you are certainly against anything the PLP has to say or suggest without even looking at what is being said. You have the democratic right to support who you want, I have no problem with that. However if you are going to continue to criticize, at least criticize the points that are being put forward as opposed to the person who is bringing them forward.

I was always taught that you can learn from everyone in life, even the foolish, because from the foolish you can learn what not to do. I am not saying the PLP members are foolish, I am just drawing a reference.. Yes we are in debt and the country is in a delicate position and some of it is down to the prior administration, but they are certainly not responsible for the events that where taking place on the global stage circa 2008.

If you look back at the PLP’s tenure, it is dishonest to suggest that it was 14 years of economic terror. That is a lie and the constant narrative, no matter how much it is repeated doesn’t make it true. The first 6-7 years of the PLP’s tenure, the local economy was thriving like never before, how much credit have the PLP ever been given for this period. If I sit here and say the the PLP never made any bad decisions when there where the government I would be foolish, just as foolish for an OBA supporter to suggest that their party hasn’t made any bad decisions.

Although Mr. Burt is a PLP Minister, he wasn’t the Finance Minister during the PLP’s reign, and although I am sure he would stand behind his former colleagues and support them for the better of the party, he should at least be given the platform to suggest ideas that could help the country as a whole going forward regardless of which party you support. The constant character attacks are not helping anybody at this time, and it only serves to divide the community even more. What is so ironic is that the OBA supporters will then go on to call the PLP the party of hate etc..

Moral of the story, if you are going to attack, at least debate the points being made, this constant immature drivel is just that drivel.

    • Lois Frederick says:

There is an enormous trust deficit. That is your answer. Burt was very much part of the the problem in the death throws of the last Govt. To come now like he has all the answers to save Bermuda is extremely rich and to be honest very hard to take seriously. He has not eaten any humble pie at all. Quite the opposite, he has practiced his bold faced response at to why the former Govt. including himself were not responsible at all. There is the trust deficit.

      • Impressive says:

point taken,, but the OBA is building up a trust deficit at the moment as well, unfortunately

    • hmmm says:

      Hello Burt.

      • Impressive says:

If I sit here and say the the PLP never made any bad decisions when there where the government I would be foolish, just as foolish for an OBA supporter to suggest that their party hasn’t made any bad decisions.

        thanks

    • The Truth and Nothing but the Truth !! says:

Your soooo PLP,, Talk the talk, forget to remember 2008 to 2012, and never walk the walk, simply because the PLP HAVE ALWAYS BEEN LACKING !!! And still are,,,”BIG TIME”!

      • Impressive says:

“If I sit here and say the the PLP never made any bad decisions when they where the government I would be foolish, just as foolish for an OBA supporter to suggest that their party hasn’t made any bad decisions.”

        thanks

        • Raymond Ray says:

@ Impressive: That’s a fact, the One Bermuda Alliance haven’t been quite a success as expected pre-elections and have come short as had others i.e. Progressive Labour Party. It isn’t a time to be “pissing into the winds”, but a time to unite for the betterment of all.
So to all who do support the Opposition Party please do accept the fact that, “Progressive Labour Party are not the Government. Stop being a stick in the spokes.” :-( Or is that your plan at any cost to the citizens of Bermuda?
