Women’s Rugby Team Wins In North Carolina
The Bermuda Women’s Rugby Team touring as the ’Dark n Stormys’ won the inaugural Old Toe Rugby International 7s held in Charlotte, North Carolina last weekend.
The tournament had been arranged largely to give the eleven-player Bermuda team some match practice in advance of their Internationals in June and especially to give four rookie players their first taste of senior rugby.
The Dark n Stormys conceded only two tries in their four games beating Kennesaw State University [Mother Ruckers] 22-7, University North Carolina, Charlotte 34-0, Elon University Women 42-0 before again defeating Mother Ruckers in the final 22-5.
Throughout their games the Bermuda team stuck to their plan of expansive 7s rugby and their superior strength and fitness was evident throughout. There was plenty of skill, pace and patience shown in all games and the squad grew noticeably in confidence during the tournament.
All the pre-tour goals were met and this result should provide a real impetus as the squad pushes onwards to NACRA 2015 in Cary, NC 13th and 14th June. Special thanks to Old Toe Rugby for organising, Charlotte Rugby Club for hosting and to our Kerry Heigham for managing.
BFRU President Sean Field-Lament said, “ I am obviously very proud of the Bermuda Women’s National team rugby- from a humble fledging grass roots start- women’s contact rugby has blossomed. We are now playing the sport on the international stage.
“Coach Andy Crichton and his ladies have put in a tremendous amount of work. The effort is starting to yield results which bodes well for the future of the sport. In particular we are now looking to improve our World standings at the NACRA tournament in June. Women’s rugby is growing globally and is an Olympic and Commonwealth Sport.
“I would actively encourage anybody interested to get involved. There are plenty of opportunities to get fit, learn about the sport of rugby, embrace its positive values and ultimately represent Bermuda”.
Well done ladies!!
