Bermuda Bicycle Association Cycling Results
Local cyclists competed on Sunday morning [June 7] in a road race organised by the Madison Digicel Team, dubbed Passo Dello Knapton [x2] for the double ascent of Knapton Hill from Harrington Sound.
Designed to split the various category races with the tough climbing effort, the incline had the desired effect in several of the categories, leaving many panting cyclists to chase the leaders. With spectators lining the upper part of the road it was slightly reminiscent of the crowds who came out to watch the racing on May 25th.
In the A category David McComas [Team Tokio] instigated a break from the pack and he was subsequently joined by Phil Mace of Madison Digicel and Neil de ste Croix of Bicycle Works. The three held off the chase attempts of the remainder of the peloton with McComas taking the final sprint from Mace with de ste Croix just behind.
The B race stayed together other than those who we spit out the back on Knapton Hill with 23 of the original 28 to trade attacks. Kaden Hopkins was easily the quickest up Knapton both times but coming early in the race meant that the field had time to reel him in. With Team Tokio doing the bulk of the chasing and largely controlling the tempo, it came down to the final loop to St. Davids.
Hopkins attacked late in the last lap just before Clearwater Middle School but the group was ready and Hopkins wasn’t able to hold off Chad Townsell who pipped him at the line for the win with Luis Martins [Bicycle Works] rounding out the podium.
Veteran Ricky Smith topped the C group ahead of new-comer Steve Smith and then Garth Flemming in a race which was devastated by the double Knapton. Similar splits occurred in the Women’s category with Karen Smith and Gabriella Arnold [both Winners Edge] getting the advantage on Sarah Bonnett and Zoey Roberts with Bonnett taking third. The junior categories were won by Alex Bordage [Junior A - Winners Edge], Ensue-Nico Davis [Junior B - BCA] and Blake Oliveira [Junior C - Winners Edge].
The next two weekends will see the national championships in time trial [June 14] and road race [June 21]. Dominique Mayho is expected to return to the island for the road race event, giving him the opportunity to demonstrate what he has learned from the last four months in California, Belgium and Canada.
This morning he started the Philly Cycling Classic, a major one-day race with top US and international professionals in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately he crashed on the second lap and after remounting chased for two laps before being pulled by the officials. He returns to Canada for racing next weekend and then back to Bermuda.
Also overseas, 2015 Junior National Sports Scholarship recipient Robin Horsfield competed in the Horseshoe Valley Canada Cup mountain bike race today but suffered two flats and eventually recorded a DNF in the off-road race.
