Police Confirm Death Of 81 Year Old Leon Smith

[Updated] The police have confirmed that 81 year old Leon Smith passed away earlier today [June 16] following a collision that occurred earlier this month.

A police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service can now confirm the death of 81 year old Leon Smith who passed away at 1:30pm today [Tuesday] and the BPS extends our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

“81 year old Leon Smith was travelling on his motorcycle when he collided with a truck at the junction of Cavendish Road and Lane Hill in Pembroke around 1:50pm Monday June 1st. He was taken to KEMH and remained in the ICU until his untimely passing.

“Inquiries regarding this fatality is underway and any witnesses or persons who were traveling through the Cavendish Road, Lane Hill Pembroke area around 1:45pm Monday June 1st , should contact the Roads Policing Unit on 295-0011.

“A family liaison officer has been assigned to the family and this marks the 6th Road Traffic Fatality for 2015.”

Update 7.04pm: Minister of Tourism Development and Transport Shawn Crockwell, today extended condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Leon Smith who died today as a result of a recent road traffic collision.

“I offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Smith. My thoughts and prayers are with them as they grieve his passing,” the Minister said.

Update June 17, 1.11pm: A police spokesperson said, “The investigation into the fatal collision that claimed the life of 81 year old Leon Smith continues.

“Mr. Smith was critically injured around 1:50pm Monday, June 1st when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a truck at the junction of Cavendish Road and Lane Hill in Pembroke.

“He eventually passed away at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit on Tuesday, June 16th.

“Witnesses or persons who were in the Cavendish Road, Lane Hill Pembroke area around 1:45pm Monday, June 1st that have not yet come forward should contact Constable Shantia Furbert at the Roads Policing Unit on telephone number 247-1788.”
