Gabriel Deoliveira Dies After Industrial Accident

[Updated: Police confirm that 62-year-old Gabriel Deoliveira has died following an industrial accident at the Pink Beach site.]

Police and first responders are on scene following an industrial accident at the Pink Beach site this afternoon [July 29].

Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said, “At about 2:18pm police and first responders attended an industrial accident that took place at Pink Beach on South Road is Smiths.

“It appears a fork lift has fallen over an embankment, and the operator is presently trapped in the cab of the vehicle. At present the scene is very active.”

One person is understood to have been seriously injured. We will update as able.

Update 3.11pm: Mr Caines has confirmed that a 62-year-old man has been pronounced dead.

Update 3.35pm: Police Media Manager Dwayne Caines said, “At 2.19pm, first responders attended a report of an incident that took place at Pink Beach in Smiths.

“It appears that a 62-year-old man was operating heavy equipment when that heavy equipment went over an embankment. This resulted in that man being trapped under the embankment.

“Sadly, he was pronounced dead on the scene.

“Presently, officers from the Forensic Support Unit, as well as government officers from the Health and Safety Department, are on scene processing the whole environment.

“Police are withholding the name of the victim until next of kin has been notified.”

Mr Caines also confirmed that no one else was injured.

Update 4.36pm: A police spokesperson said, “Around 2:18pm Wednesday [July 29], first responders attended an industrial accident that took place at Pink Beach on South Road in Smiths.

“A 62 year old man was operating heavy equipment, when that heavy equipment fell over an embankment resulting in the man being trapped. The man was later pronounced dead at the scene by an on-call doctor.

“Presently officers from the Forensic Support Unit and the Government Health and Safety Department are on the scene. No further information will be given until the next of kin have been notified.”

Update 5.02pm: Premier Michael Dunkley said, “This is such a sad and terrible tragedy. I wish to extend my sincerest and heartfelt condolences to the gentleman’s family, his friends and his co-workers and let them know that they are in our thoughts at this very difficult time.”

Update 8.57pm: Fire Service Spokesperson Acting Lieutenant Jamal Albuoy said, “Today, July 29, 2015 at 2:17 pm, Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service [BFRS] responded to an industrial accident at the Pink Beach Construction site on South Road, Smith’s with an appliance from Hamilton Station, two appliances from Clearwater Station and a total of 10 personnel.

“Upon arrival, it was discovered a piece of heavy machinery had lost its footing and gone over an embankment with the operator trapped inside.

“Another excavator machine onsite was used to assist with getting the occupant out of the wreckage.

“The accident is under investigation at this time by the Health & Safety Officer and the Bermuda Police Service. No other details will be released at this time.”

Update 11.57pm: A Sardis Development Ltd spokesperson said, “The owners of Pink Beach are extremely saddened to learn of the tragic death of one of the workers on our redevelopment site.

“We continue to work with the authorities and our contractor to determine the cause of this accident. We send out heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and co- workers of the deceased.”

Update July 30, 11.39am: A police spokesperson said, “Police can now confirm the death of 62 year old Gabriel Deoliveira of Crown Lane in Devonshire who died as a result of an industrial accident that place at Pink Beach on South Road in Smiths on Wednesday at 2:19pm.

“At appears that Gabriel was operating heavy equipment, when that heavy equipment fell over an embankment resulting in him being trapped and resulting in his death being certified by an on call doctor at 3:30pm.

“An investigation in the circumstances surrounding the death of Gabriel Deoliveira has commenced and the Bermuda Police Service extends our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.”
