Man Sentenced To 30 Days: Assaulting Police

August 25, 2015

Appearing in Magistrates Court today  [Aug 25], 35-year-old Southampton resident Patrick Russell was given a thirty day prison sentence after he had plead guilty to assaulting a police officer in the Emporium building on Front Street in the early morning hours on August 15th.

Mr Russell also plead guilty to urinating in a public place.

The Crown Prosecutor told Magistrate Archie Warner that police had come upon Mr Russell as he was urinating on the street level of the Emporium building. On accosting him, Mr Russell became aggressive and the matter then escalated.

Mr Russell explained to the Magistrate that he had spoken to the police and thought that the Police Constable involved had forgiven him. Mr Russell said that he was surprised that the matter had come to Court, and that his behaviour that night was not normal for him. However, the Magistrate said his record indicated otherwise.

The sentence was thirty days in prison on the assault charge with no separate penalty for the second charge.
