  1. Unbelievable says:

Just a question but why have there been so many bus cancellations?

    • U.I.B says:

They do it because they can.

Here is the sickening part. There are obviously 365 days in a year. Like the rest of us, bus drivers are scheduled to work five days a week. 52 weeks minus 2 days = 104 days. 365-104 = 261 days of actual scheduled work. Deduct average of 4 weeks vacation (25 work days) and we are left with 236 days. Deduct 70 days paid sick leave and we have 166 days. And for those of you that say just because they have them doesn’t mean they use them you need to live in my neighborhood near two bus drivers. Now lets also consider there have been about 4 wildcat strikes, meetings, or marches a year that have affected or prevented them from working. Now we are left with 166 days of actual work or 5 and a half months out of a twelve that they are asked.

Let me apologize in advance to SOME drivers are there are a few that are reliable and do not take advantage of the system. Unfortunately, they are the exception and not the rule. one bad apple does not spoil the whole bunch, but when most of the apples are rotten we assume the rest are bruised and turning.

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

The Department of Public Transportation….A bunch-of-amateurs!!

They would NOT last 5 minutes in the real world!!

  2. Terry says:

    Thanks again BIU/PLP/Ewart.

    • Onion Juice says:

Um, we never had this problem under PLP, see the problem is you took a gamble to cut the funds for the drivers, before banking on the Furlough days to cover the Hanbury and Dodwell gift club.

      • RBKing says:

Um, hey Dreamer, this all STARTED under the PLP. Obviously you never catch a bus. I do. You don’t, which is why you know nothing. FLMFAO.

      • Earth watch police says:

Bermuda s hardships can all be placed at the feet of the plp.

  3. kangoocar says:

Why the heck to we need cameras in our buses?? They are never on the road anyway?? I wonder what this unannounced labour dispute is over this time?? Or is it, the drivers just realized they still had some sick time due to them?? When will the government just scrap this crappy bus service and save us the TAX payers some money???

    • Say Whaat? says:

Spoken like the privileged male that you are. It provides service for the working poor, the seniors, our children AND our tourists! But yeah, just scrap it cause no one cares about those people.

      • Onion Juice says:

That’s why its called Public Transportation because Mostly public school children catch the bus, with the exception of B.I. and a few from W.A.

      • Earth watch police says:

Plp certainly don’t care about those people.

    • Regina says:

      PRIVATIZE!

  4. Vulcan Trash Cleaner says:

    More unauthorised time off!

  5. Dockyard Lackey says:

So basically there is No Service for all the hard working people who depend on public transport to get home from work. I guess there is a very important meeting going on somewhere. They still get paid you know, as their brothers and sisters work in the Accountant General’s Office and authorize the payroll cheques. One day we will all wake up.

    • U.I.B says:

At yet some of the bus drivers on my route can’t seem to figure out why some passengers don’t reply back when (and if) they say Good Evening. You have ruined too many of my rides home. Thank goodness my children are older now. I feel for the parents with children that were left stranded AGAIN because of the PTB and /or Unions. I await an answer as to why routes were cancelled. Was it a Union “meeting” that had to be held now, was it equipment failure, or bad management. I hope that with that many different routes being affected that it wasn’t equipment failure. I hate to think that that many buses broke down at once. Time will tell.

  6. Hey says:

    Here we go again….

  7. RBKing says:

Just as long as they get their 70 days sick leave a year. That’s what’s important.

    • U.I.B says:

It’s not pretend sniff, sniff, cough, cough Flew season yet is it? I need to get me some sniffling, sneezing\, coughing, aching, stuffy head, fever so I can rest medicine! Going to Caesar’s Pharmacy to get me some Nyquil!

Or let me guess, the union isn’t happy because the minister did not show up to a meeting after being told that he wasn’t invited. Furbert got skunked and lost some of his chinas so he picking up his marbles and going home in anger!

I hope this is equipment related or even hoping for mis-management. I hate to think its another silly labour dispute. You can only cry wolf so many times before people stop listening and nobody stops running.

  8. Earth watch police says:

They are trying to retrofit those tyres that we’re the wrong size it’s going to take a while.

  9. wondering says:

Why does this happen during cruise ship season? I never heard of SIGHTSEEING BUSES getting cancelled.

  10. Coffee says:

I say … The Trans&Tourism minister needs to take responsibility for the transport mess in this country . Well maybe not , after all it’s the OBA that’s running the show these days .

    • kangoocar says:

Lying again coffee???? The BIU needs to take responsibility for the transportation mess we have!!!!!

      • Coffee says:

@kangocar … If your telling the truth , you give credence to the belief that the OBA is a weak government . No union in the world controls the operations of a government department .

        • Joker says:

Only in Bermuda coffee … Only in Bermuda

        • jt says:

          Privatise.

        • inna says:

          Laughable you are mate.

          • Onion Juice says:

If you Dreamers were paying attention during the budget cuts, they cut the funds for bus drivers, hoped that the Furlough days would continue, to fund the Hanbury and Dodwell gift club to spend like drunken sailors.

            • RBKing says:

Hey Dreamer, there were service cuts like this during 2010, 2011 and 2012.
No public employee ever loses their job, remember?
They’re just taking their vacation , oh no I mean 70 days sick leave. LMFAO.

    • U.I.B says:

Yes Coffee, the OBA , like the PLP are running things. It s the BIU that is disrupting things or drivers calling in sick ;not to be confused with actually being sick. I just hope this time its not them again. I’m just crossing my fingers that this is a product of too many broken buses, legitimate illness or something else, although I can think of what.

      • Coffee says:

Nope … The OBA is in charge … Fully . The buck stops with them . The other organizations are at this point irrelevant .

        • Uh huh says:

Ahhhh, and there it is. The union and their members can disrupt public services, and it’s the Government’s fault. Wrong.

I said on day one of the OBA winning the election (oooo, that hurts eh?), that the unions and their members will do all they can do disrupt the day to day running of the country. That is what we are seeing.

How did the collection for Hayward go yesterday at the Public Works half day off the taxpayers expense at Clearwater?

        • Earth watch police says:

You said it they are irrelevant .Bermudians are smart we will hold to account anyone that’s wants to destroy Bermuda . The wheels of justice run slow but they are gaining momentum daily To anyone responsible for Bermuda demise karma gonna get you.

        • Anbu says:

Ya well its easy to blame the oba when the plp/union instructs its workers to walkout/sickout inna?! Dont even try and deny it. Anyone with a brain knows whats goin on so go lay down. Better yet get back to fri@@in work. Bunch of lazy good for nothings.

        • Use Your Head says:

What can the OBA do if the unions encourage their drivers to call in sick, then prohibit any punitive action?

          • Coffee says:

The workers dictate to the unions not vice versa . The collective bargaining agreement governs any actions decided upon by workers , government , union , employers … Try again !

            • RBKing says:

The workers dictated they wanted a 17% union dues price increase, did they?

  11. Rmeenswell says:

    God help us

  12. Axlerod says:

This is where the similarity rubber for the OBA meets the road! They are no better than the PLP at running public transport!
!.) Monitors at bus depot, purchased at great cost to the public Treasury, to display schedules still not working…AFTER breaking down 4 years ago!

2.) Paper based bus schedules not available, not even from the PTB booth where 2, yes 2 people work making change for ticket purchasers!
    3) Can no one at PTB use a spreadsheet even to create and print off schedules for posting around the terminal. 4.) Why no automated ticket dispensing machines! they are available in every city in the world!!

Bus service need to get a wake up call…Filipino bus drivers will likely do the trick!

    • Raymond Ray says:

Axlerod you are soooo right: “Bus service need to get a wake up call…Filipino bus drivers will likely do the trick.”
Putting all jokes aside, can’t you not see this is just a prelude to and all public transportation strike put on by B.I.U. and other Unions just to disrupt the upcoming America’s Cup? Shame yes, but true :-(

      • Dimples says:

You do not know what you’re talking about. You have something against the BIU. Look at your own church members who are doing wrong.

    • AS YOU ARE says:

Spread sheet! Those are used for sick days, vacation days and strike out days..
Pathetic, privatize it see how dey act then.

  13. Tania Stafford says:

This puts stress on drivers as well as passengers. I travelled on yesterday evening’s buses and would like to thank the drivers who did their very best to accommodate students, commuters and tourists.

  14. Obvious says:

This is obviously an unauthorised plan of strike action. It’s disgraceful and speaks to the mindset of workers and unions who refuse to honour an honest work ethic. Note the time of these cancellations. They affect many people trying to get home after work. Our people hurting our people as usual….we just don’t get it and that’s why I no longer put my hard earned money in a Bermuda union.

  15. Uh huh says:

What does that have to do with the Government? Surely that’s down to the employees of the Ministry of Transport to sort out? If they are unable to do their job, then maybe get rid of them and replace them with people who can? What does their Permanent Secretary do all day?

  16. vexed says:

I don’t remember any bus cancellations during the summer (when there was vacation time) but now the schools are back it all starts again …. coincidence in the timing?

  17. Number 8 says:

Why do they cancel the busiest routes at the busiest time?

At least they announced it this time. Several bus routes did not run on the 15th. I was waiting at East Broadway from 5:30 to 6:45 for the number 8 bus. Only 2 went by in that time period and both were full, due to the cancelled routes.

  18. positivity says:

This is getting ridiculous! The fares go up and the service goes down. Would you pay 20% more for the same carton of milk or for the same meal and not blink an eye? This is no longer acceptable. As passengers, we need to do something or nothing will change!

  19. shirley says:

Can I get back my $69 please

  20. Triangle Drifter says:

When is the OBA going to grow a pair & start applying the recommendations of the, not cheap to the taxpayer, SAGE Commission?

Privatise public transport. Get rid of the inept PTB & the lazy over compensated drivers.

  21. nok says:

By Privatising the bus service they still can become unionized so go ahead and carry on..I am not mad at the bus drivers!!!!

  22. stunned... says:

this country needs the likes of a Margaret Thatcher to deal with these unions.
