BSMART Flagship Program Called “Bright Spot”
BSMART’s flagship program was recently highlighted by The Zero to Three report commissioned by the Bermuda Community Foundation as a “bright spot” based on “its theory-based, outcomes-driven approach, and proven measurements demonstrating effectiveness.”
A spokesperson said, “The report, which was commissioned to assess the early childhood development landscape in Bermuda, declared that the lack of quality services with qualified professionals that were accessible to children was a major concern for Bermuda.
“BSMART provides progressive, innovative and accredited neuro-developmental programs to ensure all children reach their optimal physiological and neurological milestones that will lead them on the road to academic success. These outcomes are critical in combating early developmental and learning delays, that if left unaddressed lead to academic struggle and increased chance of school failure.
“Ensuring that even the most vulnerable children are school-ready prevents the longer terms costs associated with the negative outcomes that are significantly more likely when students do not successfully complete their education.
“BSMART’s flagship program is its afterschool program which is available for all children between the ages of 5 and 8 years. provides foundational neurophysiological brain stimulation input in the areas of; auditory discrimination, vision, laterality/directionality, eye-hand coordination, fine motor, grossmotor, development, ocular motor development, visual motor perception, and cognitive development.
“In last school year’s round of student evaluations, BSMART measured an increase in 32.5% for students’ Brigance Word test and a 51 point increase in their Slosson Oral Reading Test, demonstrating some of the strong results student’s achieve when participating in BSMART’s intervention.
“So far this year, 11 students have received the SMART intervention through BSMART’s intensive afterschool programme, and an additional 153 students have benefitted from SMART through BSMART camps. Bursaries for students-in-need are made available thanks to the support of donor companies and foundations, such as HSBC who recently provided BSMART with funding towards bursaries.
“To make an even greater impact, BSMART is appeal to the community for volunteers who can assist with both its homework club [a part of the afterschool program] as well as its infant development drop-in program. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact admin@bsmartfoundation.org.”
