Customs Dept Set For International Customs Day
The Customs Department, under the Ministries of National Security and Finance, will celebrate International Customs Day on Tuesday, January 26, with members of the public invited to attend the third annual Open House on that day from 10.00am to 2.00pm.
The celebration will include a church service on January 24, the Open House on January 26, and the annual C.A. Smith Run, Walk, Ride Fun Race on January 27.
The theme of this year’s Customs Day is “Digital Customs: Progressive Engagement,” and a number of events have been planned in recognition of the event. The week will start with Officers and other staff members attending a church service on Sunday, January 24 at the St. Paul’s A.M.E. Church, beginning at 11.00am.
On Tuesday, January 26, there will be an open house at #6 Cruise Ship Passenger Terminal, Lower Level, on Front Street, where there will be a series of displays and demonstrations; the public will have an opportunity to interact with Customs Officers and ask questions.
School students are also being encouraged to attend, as there will also be interactive displays for which small prizes will be awarded for correct responses.
On Wednesday, January 27, the annual C.A. Smith Run, Walk, Ride Fun Race – named for Senior Customs Officer Colin Smith – will begin 9.00am. The race will start at Clearwater Beach car park and travel 4.29 miles to the L.F. Wade International Airport Cargo Shed; prizes will be awarded for various categories.
Collector of Customs Lucinda Pearman said, “The Customs Department continues to play an important role in the Bermuda economy and our mission is to promote compliance with Bermuda’s customs laws through quality service and responsible enforcement, thereby contributing to the economic and social stability of our community.
“Members of our staff are responsible for facilitating trade, assessing and collecting revenue and interdicting drugs and other contraband. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage the public to come to our open day and learn more about who we are, and what we do.”
