Two Films To Feature At Weekend Film Series

April 11, 2016

Award winning films from the Sundance and Cannes film festivals are to screen at the Weekend Film Series on Sunday April 17.

Screening at 3pm, Sonita was the big documentary winner at Sundance this year, winning both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the world cinema documentary competition. The film also won the Audience Award at International Documentary Festival Amsterdam, widely considered the top documentary festival in the world.

Filmmaker Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami tells the inspirational and courageous story of spirited 18-year-old Sonita, an undocumented Afghan illegal immigrant in Iran who fights to live the way she wants — as an artist, singer and musician — in spite of all the obstacles she faces, including her conservative, patriarchal family.

But for the time being, her only fans are the other teenage girls in a Tehran shelter. And her family has a very different future planned for her — as a bride, she is worth $9,000. Director Maghami poignantly shifts from observer to participant, altering expectations in this intimate and joyful portrait. The film was rated ‘12A’ in the United Kingdom.

Screening at 5.15pm, My Golden Days was an award winner in the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. Director Arnaud Desplechin also won a Cesar Award in France as Best Director for the film.

The film features stunning performances from newcomers Quentin Dolmaire as young Paul and Lou Roy-Lecollinet as the unforgettable Esther in this coming-of-age tale full of humour, heartbreak and ravishing romance.

This intoxicating and evocative portrait of youth sees Paul return to France after years away and reflect on his life. In a series of flashbacks he recalls his childhood, his parents and family — and most of all, he remembers Esther, the beautiful, rude, haughty soul and love of his life. The film was rated ‘R’ in the United States.

Tickets for both films are on sale now at the Oceans Gift Shop, BUEI, or by calling 294-0204.
