Video: ‘Safety First’ For Bermudian AC Diver
When a SoftBank Team Japan crew member accidentally went overboard during a practice session last week, Bermudian Sam Bennett’s position as safety diver for the team came into sharp focus.
In his role Mr Bennett — a PADI master scuba diver trainer — has helped create safety procedures for the team that are specific to Bermuda. In this instance the 20-year-old ensured the sailor was safe by alerting the chase boat driver of the situation.
Once the wake cleared, Mr Bennett was ready to jump overboard to rescue him, but he received the hand signal indicating that all was well, and fortunately the sailor escaped without injury.
In this video, he explains his role with the team further
This opportunity came to Mr Bennett after he volunteered as a safety diver during last year’s America’s Cup World Series event in Bermuda. His specialties include Boat Diving, Search and recover diving as well as in water medical hazards and treatments. He has also worked on various ships as a sailor.
Today his regular responsibilities include making sure all the safety gear is functioning for the sailors, filling the emergency air tanks and attaching them to the sailors’ life jackets.
If there are guests on board the AC Catamaran, he preps them on safety procedures. He also ensures the medical bag is filled with required medical supplies and checks his own gear – while he’s on the chase boat, Mr Bennett is in full dive gear in order to be ready in the event of an incident.
Could not be more proud of you Sam!
That has to be a super cool job! What an achievement to have all that training under your belt and such an organization willing to put their faith in you to perform as/when needed. Well done dude.
