Rebecca Heyliger Reaches Olympic B Standard
The Validus National Championships got underway, with Rebecca Heyliger finishing the 50 freestyle in a time with 26.13, which is 4 hundredths under the Olympic B standard of 26.17.
Bermuda National Swimming Coach Ben Smith said, “On the first night of the Validus National Championships the weather was rainy but the times were fast. Starting off the night was a duel between Maddy Moore and Rebecca Heyliger in a 50 freestyle time trial.
“Both of them dipped under the National record of 26.58 with Maddy coming second in 26.36 and Rebecca smashing her time with 26.13. The excitement went throughout the pool as that time is 4 hundredths under the Olympic ‘B’ standard of 26.17.
“This means that she is the first swimmer from Bermuda to go under the time during the qualification period. This is the first step to qualification which is an amazing moment. Elijah Daley continued his record breaking streak by smashing Evan Farrows 9-10 record in the 400 free from 5:35.25 to 5:18.74.
“Brian Desmond also was able to set a record tonight in the 1500 free. He took Tyler Smiths record of 19:30.02 with his time of 19:22.13. We were also treated to some amazing swims from the Canada Youth team in the 800 free female and 1500 free male. Tonight’s was a good set up for an exciting weekend to come.”
