Inspection Planned After Wheel Comes Off Bus
After a wheel came off a bus, the Department of Public Transportation said they have “undertaken to pull all the vehicles of that make and year out of service to carry out a thorough inspection before they are put back into the fleet.”
A spokesperson told Bernews, “The Ministry has liaised with personnel in the Department of Public Transportation [DPT] who are actively investigating the matter.
“The DPT has also undertaken to pull all the vehicles of that make and year out of service to carry out a thorough inspection before they are put back into the fleet.
“The DPT is committed to providing the most efficient service and takes safety of the passengers of utmost importance. To that end, the DPT will endeavor to keep the service running as smoothly as possible while remedying the situation.”
Cant wait to hear how this will all be blamed on the OBA !

Because the OBA does not have the guts to hold the civil service to task that’s how. Most of these departments are poorly run and were poorly run under the previous government but now it’s time for the new one to turn a new page and stop throwing money at these departments without getting an equal service for pay in return. Start with the managers and hold them accountable. Letting go the little guy might cause civil disrupt but start with the head and the ones under will have an opportunity to move up.
Who is de minister of Transportation?
He’s not the one who is responsible for inspections and regular maintenance…he’s the one that you take your findings to to get approval for the importation of required parts…so whoever sits in that air conditioned office all day at the terminal is the one who needs to be held accountable…just like you football fanatics know quite well who gets fired if the team doesn’t perform as anticipated..? The COACH or MANAGER not the player, or the Owner…so your point is..??

I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments about the CS performance and holding them accountable. However, the political arm of Govt, the MPs and Cabinet, have no control over the CS other than funding and policy direction. All other matters come under the remit of the Public Service Commission and its members, who are appointed by the Governor and answer to him.
Cabinet members can lament poor performance in their ministries but can do little about it other than requesting that the Premier lobby the Governor in their regular meetings to get the PSC to do their jobs and hold the CS accountable.
You can’t push on a string.

In addition to looking at the make and year, you might want to inspect all buses worked on by that mechanic.
I feel, that the buses need to be checked at the end of their run on a daily basis or at least weekly. The amount of driving that is done by one bus alone is a lot. Thank the Lord nobody was seriously injured. Can you imagine if it came off while going around the corner at Five Star Island??!!!! Don’t know who dropped the ball on the maintenance of that bus but please please don’t let it happen again.

Its called PREVENTATIVE MAINTENENCE. But its typical lets wait for something to happen NOW we are going to inspect the buses. Try doing it before and if it is done, fire the person that done it.
A serious situation but always remember and or go back to your youth or speak to Grand Pa/Ma about………………………

Comparatively speaking , on a world wide scale , this isn’t rare . Fortunately , with our small roads , it is uncommon here .
As someone who spends a lot of time on a bike I worry about something like this all the time .
I see heavy trucks all over the island that look like they’re lacking proper maintenance and it’s not unusual at all to see a large truck with wheels spinning out of balance and chunks of tyre missing .
Thank heavens that it didn’t come off at 30mph on a tight bend somewhere with either oncoming traffic or a cliff with water at the bottom as the only choices .
Just so glad that no-one was hurt because it could have been a disaster.
This is what happens when the bearing nut is not torqued to spec.

There is no grease in that bearing. Simple maintenance would have avoided this issue.

Looks like a failure of the stub axel, if you look closely you’ll see that the threaded shaft has snapped off.
Couldn’t see that. Threads look like they were possibly ground off by a spinning wheel maybe.
While there at it slip down to Govment Quarry garage where they repair the trash trucks and fix the one that tracks the rear of the truck over the centre line.
That should Never have been allowed out of the work shop !
thank God nobody was hurt and further more they shouldn’t send any buses for the tourists up Dockyard, their is plenty of transport up there already with the taxis and minibuses.
Tell them that BEFORE they book their trips to Bermuda. You may have fewer tourists on the buses.
That dept. Is most likely understaffed and underfunded . I hope the new minister gives as much vigor and undivided attention to this ministry as he did to the former . How about creating a pathway to transportation !
Not surprising. Passed a bus last week driving with a completely flat tire.
No excuse for this. If they had a preventative maintenance plan this would never have happened. Instead, like the ferries they wait until it breaks and fix it.
Falls entirely on the shoulders of the fleet manager. Probably rhe same guy who let’s them go out with faulty brake lights.
It doesn’t have anything to do with year manufacturing or model. Just a lack of preventive maintenance. And some folks want us to run our own airline. Can’t imagine the engine falling off an airliner. Good Grief!
I think the director and his support team will look closely at the service record of this particular bus, and see if there was neglect or excessive strain/weight. It is quite rare that they will reveal to the general public their findings and corrective action. We have had buses roll from a parked position, hand brake up, into a business on Washinghton Street. This should be a wake up call to all who own commercial vehicles, to have them checked perhaps 5 or 6 times a year. The Occupational Health Dept needs to speak to us as well.
You assume that there are service records. The civil service is notoriously useless at keeping records, or indeed doing any form of maintenance.
And we wonder why we need engineers from overseas ?

Following is more food for thought. Why not hire people to work a night shife? a crew (at regular wages) people are complaining they are / have been out of work so here is an opportunity for them if taken to the Department of Public Transportation.

You have no clue what you are talking about. The spindle/castle nut or as you call it bearing nut dOES NOT GET TORQUED….. it gets tightened until all the play comes out of the bearing when the wheel is rocked side to side and a split/cotter pin is installed to stop the castle nut from backing off….. The dust cap is then installed….. I guess no one put the split pin in….. be careful how you preach, you obviously sit at a desk……

My ‘desk’ has 10 wheels, is longer than anything you will see on Bermuda roads & I do the majority of service work on it, including things like brake & bearing replacement & gets driven 15,000 to 20,000 miles a year. Thankyou. Glad I don’t have a clue.

Something that should be deabted between shadow minister and transport minister.
I would refer to the service manual. In a general sense you are correct however tightening a nut until you get no play can cause over tightening depending on how strong the individual is. An alternative method could be tighten to 200ft lbs.then back off nut one full turn then tighten to 50 ft lbs.Then install lock washer or nut and tighten to 400 ft lbs. Each manufacturer would specify the correct method to follow. Failling to follow manufacturers recommendations, not a good idea.
investigation for what the bus is over 15 years old when the standard bus usage is at max twelve years for buses way more well maintained than ours
Bring in overseas assistance, that can be a worker and training our staff at the same time. If our staff put up a fight , its means they don’t want the free (in a way)training!
