Trey Mallory Acquires ITF Junior Circuit Points
Richard “Trey” Mallory made history this week by becoming Bermuda’s youngest tennis player ever to acquire ITF Junior Circuit points.
A spokesperson said, “Trey is currently training in Florida at L’Academie de Tennis and recently played in the 2016 Curacao Open, where he defeated Curacao’s Xaveam M. van Wijk to earn his first ITF points on center court in front of van Wijk’s home crowd.
“It was a marathon match lasting over 2 hours and 40 minutes; with Trey winning 3-6, 7-6 [17-15], 6-2.
“The ITF Junior Circuit is the premier level for worldwide competition among under 18 junior tennis players. Trey has managed to win his first points at the age of 14.”
Academy Coach Andres Weisskopf said, “Trey played very good today against a very good player. In the first set Trey showed a little hesitation which cost him the first set 6-3. The second set Trey played much better with both players going toe to toe with each other holding serve and forcing a second set tie-breaker which Trey ended up winning 17-15.
“This was one of the longest tie-breakers I have ever witnessed with one of my players. Trey was using his huge forehand a lot to win points; opening the court with his inside out forehand, looking for the open court and open space. Also, with his backhand Trey was able to neutralize the power of his opponent.
“The most important part of the match to me was how Trey was able to keep himself in the match, he was very strong mentally and that’s what we look for in our players, that no matter what is going on in their match, they can remain focused and keep playing their game.
“So I was extremely happy how Trey held himself mentally. Physically we see that we are doing a good job with Trey because the match was over two hours and forty minutes long of high intensity. Trey’s superior fitness helped him pull through the marathon tie-breaker and continue that momentum going into the third set which Trey won 6-2”.
“The ITF Junior Circuit offers more than 400 tournaments in 121 different countries, mirroring the ATP and WTA circuits. The ITF Junior Circuit ranks players and crowns a year end world champion something that Trey strives to accomplish someday.”
Well done Tre, we are all very proud of you! Keep it up.
You are doing awesome young man. Keep it up and reach for the stars!!!
