BNAA Hosting Coaches Certification Course
The Bermuda National Athletics Association has been hosting a Level 1 Coaches Certification Course with two instructors from the Caribbean, saying they thought they could have more coaches certified by bringing the course to Bermuda rather than send individual coaches overseas.
BNAA President Donna Raynor said, “The BNAA have been hosting a Level 1 Coaches Certification Course since last Monday. We have brought in two instructors, Roy Thomas and Craig Connor from Jamaica and St. Kitts & Nevis to instruct the course.
“We have 12 persons participating including a few PE teachers and BNAA coaches. This was initiated by Troy Douglas before his departure and we have continued with it to make it happen. Our goal is to have all of the coaches in our program certified and starting at level 1. The coaches can then go on to become event certified following this at a later time.
“This course is a 2 week course and will be completed Saturday and the participants have to sit an exam to pass the certification. We figured we could have more coaches certified if we bring the course to Bermuda vs sending individual coaches overseas. The course is taking place at CedarBridge and the practical at the National Sports Centre.
“Cal Simons has just returned from a coaches instructors course which once he has completed Part 2 will be able to instruct these course.
“I spoke with the instructors yesterday and a few of the participants. The instructors felt the participants were very enthusiastic and was quite pleased with the participation. The participants were surprised with the amount of information they had to learn over such a short period of time. At the end of this course the coaches will be able to coach all events.
“This course is certified by the IAAF and we work in conjunction with our regional association NACAC to put on the course.”
