Video: Candlelight Service At Devonshire Church
The annual Candlelight Service was recently held at the Old Christ Anglican Church on Middle Road in Devonshire with a host of dignitaries attending the event.
The theme for this year’s service was “Onto us a child is born” and was held under the patronage of Dame Pamela Gordon Banks and Mr Andrew Banks. Canon James Francis officiated the service with many of the guests taking part in the evening’s proceedings.
Guests included Governor John Rankin, Deputy Governor Ginny Ferson, Premier Michael Dunkley, Opposition Leader David Burt, U.S. Consul General Mary Ellen Koenig, Hamilton Mayor Charles Gosling, St. George’s Mayor Quinell Francis, and more.
The church website says, “Like many of Bermuda’s Anglican Churches, Christ Church Devonshire has a history dating back to the arrival of the island’s first settlers.
“Though the exact date of the original building’s construction is unknown, the first official acknowledgement of its existence was recorded in 1654 by the Will of Captain Roger Wood, who bequethed to the church a silver beaker in recognition of its groundbreaking.”
