Somersfield Academy’s Personal Project Fair
The Somersfield Academy International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program will be hosting their annual Personal Project Fair from 10.30am to 12.00pm on Thursday, February 23, with a formal evening presentation from 6.00pm to 8.00pm.
Personal Project Coordinator Jason Hammer said, “This year’s Personal Projects represent the beautiful diversity of our most talented students who have dedicated so much of their energy and creativity into projects that are meaningful to them.
“Come and check out our seminal projects which truly reflect who we are and what we stand for here at Somersfield Academy.”
The Personal Project is a significant body of work produced over an extended period and is a product of the student’s own initiative. It is a graduation requirement of the Middle Years Program and is internationally accredited through the IB.
It provides an opportunity for students to produce a creative piece of work of their choice and to demonstrate the skills they have developed through approaches to learning.
Charlie Judd, Somersfield Academy’s IB MYP Division Head, said, “The Personal Project is our capstone project at Somersfield and is the result of a self-directed inquiry within a global context, demonstrating the approaches to learning skills, attitudes and knowledge acquired in the Middle Years Program as well as responsible action through, or as a result of learning.
“Our students have worked hard and we are proud of the final pieces that they have accomplished.”
A spokesperson said, “The International Baccalaureate Organization places great importance on the development of the student’s unique talents, this project offers students a great deal of flexibility and many opportunities for differentiation of learning and expression according to their individual needs.
“Creativity is encouraged by the aims and objectives of the personal project; the results are usually rewarding, and sometimes spectacular.
“Somersfield students have spent over six months producing their projects, some of the subject areas include digital illustration, the injustices of the 2016 Summer Olympics, indoor aquaponics systems, women’s empowerment projects and environmentally informed body art.
“We invite you to explore the key components of their work including the final product, a process journal, and the three-thousand-word analytical essay.
“The personal project fair that takes place in the Somersfield Gymnasium promises ‘to stimulate intellectual curiosity and accomplishment; to instill compassion and respect; and always to honor the daring dreams and hidden talents of the individual.’”
