Woman Dies, Three Men Injured In Boat Collision
[Updating: Police confirm that a woman has died following a boat collision in Hamilton Harbour. The police said the collision involved three boats, also left three men injured, and the male operator of one of the vessels involved has been arrested on suspicion of operating a vessel while impaired.]
Emergency Services responded to the area of Front Street near the Ferry Terminal tonight [June 1] to what we unofficially understand was a marine incident involving vessels colliding in Hamilton Harbour.
Bystanders report seeing multiple ambulances at the scene with Fire Service personnel and police also attending. Details are limited at this time, however we will update as able.
Update 12.22am, June 2: Police officers are still on scene near the ferry terminal where police tape is up and a police marine unit can be seen berthed at the dock.
Update 1.39am, June 2: Police have confirmed that a woman has died and three men were injured as a result of tonight’s collision.
Update 1.56am, June 2: Police Media Relations Manager Robin Simmons said, “Around 10:50pm Thursday, June 1st marine police and first responders were dispatched to a reported collision involving vessels in Hamilton harbour.
“Details are limited at this time. However, it appears that three smaller boats were involved with four people injured, three men and one woman.
“All four were rushed to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance, where the woman was pronounced dead.
“A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned and no further information regarding the deceased will be released at this time until her next of kin has been notified.
“The three injured men are still receiving treatment at the hospital. An update on their condition will be provided in due course.
“The male operator of one of the vessels involved has been arrested on suspicion of operating a vessel while impaired.
“A full investigation is underway and any witnesses are urged to contact the Criminal Investigation Department on 247-1744.”
