BILTIR Meets With Minister Jamahl Simmons

September 8, 2017

Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers [BILTIR] met with the Minister of Economic Development and Tourism Jamahl Simmons.

BILTIR Board members, April Galda, Chip Gillis, Pat Kelleher and Sylvia Oliveira, gave an overview of the association, its contribution to the Bermuda economy, the massive growth prospects and opportunities available to Bermudians in the life sector.

“The life sector has different drivers than the P&C industry, which creates a diversifying effect on the Bermuda economy. Wenda Roberts, BILTIR Corporate Secretary, informed the Minister about BILTIR’s upcoming September 19th conference and extended an invitation to the Minister.

BILTIR says: “We were delighted to meet with Minister Simmons this morning. The priorities of the new government are to focus on public education and job creation – both areas in which we believe BILTIR can collaborate. We look forward to working with the Minister and the Bermuda Government to further this agenda.”

Jamahl Simmons, Minister of Economic Development and Tourism, said: “The government is committed to being open, accessible and inclusive in our approach as we seek to grow our economy and opportunities for Bermudians.

“Greater government responsiveness, collaboration and efficiency are our approach to stakeholders as we understand that this is the best way to ensure the success of our island. We appreciate our relationship with BILTIR and look forward to working with them in protecting and growing our economy.”

BILTIR was created in 2011 to serve as a formal association to represent life insurers and reinsurers in Bermuda. The organisation’s primary focus is to advocate for the island’s life and annuity industry.

BILTIR members manage more than $196 billion in assets and insure a wide range of risk types across a broad geographic range, proving that they play an important role in the global economy.
