Chubb Appoints Smith As Chief Claims Officer

Chubb Limited announced that Michael W. Smith has been appointed Chief Claims Officer. In this role, Mr. Smith will lead the company’s claims organization globally and be responsible for all aspects of executive claims management, service and administration for Chubb through its worldwide network of claims offices.

Mr. Smith has more than 30 years of experience in insurance and law. From 2000 to 2017, he served in executive leadership roles at American International Group, most recently as Chief Transformation Officer. Mr. Smith will report to Paul Krump, Executive Vice President of Chubb Group and President, North America Commercial and Personal Insurance. The appointment is effective immediately.

Frank Lattal, the company’s Chief Claims Officer since 2003, will continue to serve as Senior Vice President, Chubb Group and will be responsible for managing the company’s largest and most complex claims globally. In addition, he will provide strategic leadership and management oversight to the company’s Brandywine run-off operations. Mr. Lattal will report to Mr. Smith.

His exceptional technical skills and claims adjudication expertise will be a strong asset in his new role handling the company’s most complex and challenging claims.”

Over 17 years at AIG, Mr. Smith served as Chief Transformation Officer; Chief Operating Officer, Global Commercial Insurance; President, Global Financial Lines; President, U.S. Financial Lines; President, Financial Lines Claims; President, Miscellaneous Professional Liability; and Chief Underwriting Officer, Miscellaneous Professional Liability.

Prior to AIG, he served in executive management roles at XL American Insurance and Zurich US Specialties. Earlier in his career, he served as an attorney at several companies and firms.

Mr. Smith has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting from the College of Business at the University of West Florida and a Juris Doctor degree from Fredric G. Levin College of Law at the University of Florida. He is a trustee of the University of Florida College of Law and a trustee of the Harlem Educational Assistance Fund [HEAF].
