City Issue Parking Enforcement Reminder
The City has issued a reminder about parking enforcement, saying “gone are the days when someone could throw their parking tickets away with no consequence.”
The City said, “In June 2017, the Traffic Offenses Procedure Amendment and Validation Act 2015 became effective.
“In partnership with the Bermuda Police Service, the City of Hamilton embarked on a new, joint initiative that would enforce the payment of parking tickets issued within the City limits.
“With additional resources in place, the City now has a dedicated input system that records all tickets issued by the traffic wardens on a daily basis.
“Tickets issued as of June 1st, 2017 carry a $75 penalty; those that are not paid within fourteen days will result in a summons, signed by a magistrate, issued to the registered owner of the offending vehicle resulting in a $100 penalty.
“Continued lack of payment will lead to court action that will carry a $150 penalty. Failure to appear in court will result in a warrant issued for the arrest of the owner of the vehicle.
“All tickets issued as of June 1st, 2017 have been and will continue to be input into the system and followed up on; they will not expire.”
City of Hamilton Chief Operating Officer, Edward Benevides said, “We have seen a major uptick in the payment of parking tickets since the new legislation was implemented. Gone are the days when someone could throw their parking tickets away with no consequence.
“Every single ticket that has been issued since June of last year, has been entered into the system. While it may take a bit more time to process the tickets to the point where summons are issued, the public should be aware that every unpaid parking ticket will be followed up on, according to the process in place, and those who don’t pay the fines in a timely fashion can expect additional fees for the summons and potential court appearance.
“Until further legislation can be passed, enforcement of paid parking will continue to be slow but the public is steadily catching on that paying for parking is much less expensive than paying for a ticket.”
The City reminds the public that on-street parking is limited to one-hour, except where otherwise noted, and that the Disabled Bays are only for those motorists that display a valid Disabled Parking Permit.
This is a lot of trouble when unpaid tickets could simply and automatically be attached to vehicle licensing. Registered owner renews license/vehicle permit, system shows unpaid fines, boom, added tax.
Much more efficient.
I was thinking this as well. This approach seems unnecessarily strong-handed.
Agreed. Way more efficient but the city will then likely have to pay Govt for collection of the fine. Which should still be more cost effective however.
That would make to much sense.
What if someone borrows your car and gets ticket and does not tell you. You end up getting arrested. Nice touch.
You’re forgetting, that would involve TCD which falls under govornment. CoH has the right idea, they might as well do the work themselves than try to get those entitled gov workers to do anything.
correct! i think the CoH should also have a place on their website where people can pay thier tickets online. or even at an ATM?
I was thinking the same. I hope they have an avenue eventually where people can pay the ticket online or over the phone.
Gotta get that money from the public. The money making machine has changed gears.
So they think arresting people for commiting a victimless crime is ok. People need to wake up. SMH!
well pay ya tickets then dummy lmfao
They wouldn’t have to do things like this if people like you would just pay the fines, or better yet just not break the law in the first place.
Well pay for your parking like everyone else.
there is no such thing as a victimless crime. idiot.
Burn m !!!
void all tickets for the Bermudians.
just bill the evil foreigners.
Well done, pay your fines.
I have a suggestion. Just put your blinker on. You can double park all day if someone is behind the wheel.
