Court: Visiting Rugby Player Fined $800 For DUI

A visiting rugby player was fined after being caught driving while impaired during a road sobriety checkpoint on Montpelier Road on Thursday evening.

Derek Townsend, 33, from Vancouver, British Columbia, was charged in Magistrates Court with driving a rental scooter while his ability to do so was impaired by alcohol.

He was also charged with refusing to comply with a demand made by a police officer to give a sample of his breath for analysis.

When tested, his blood alcohol level was 167 ml in 100 ml of blood.

Mr Townsend pleaded guilty to the second offence and was fined $800 or 80 days in jail. He had to pay the fine before being released from custody as he is scheduled to leave the island on Sunday. He was also banned from driving any vehicle in Bermuda for 12 months.
