January 24, 2019

The Bermuda Rugby Football Union [BRFU] recently offered a first aid training course across all local clubs, with physiotherapist Shara Crunden leading a course in basic CPR and first aid for eight participants from Bermuda’s four local rugby clubs.

Ms. Crunden said, “Rugby is a tremendous sport, especially for young men and woman. It has a proven to be a productive outlet both socially and physically. The sport has a physicality that allows one to challenge their body, but with that physicality comes responsibility.”

A spokesperson said, “As World Rugby continue to emphasize the need for safety in rugby, the BRFU strive to maintain the same standard. 2018 saw the introduction of the FAIR [First Aid In Rugby] course where participants were given the opportunity to gain rugby-specific first aid skills to immediately assist an injured player, while gaining a World Rugby recognized qualification.

“The current season has seen the on going support of St. John’s Ambulance Brigade, in addition to club contribution towards on site physiotherapist costs. Rugby Development Officer, Paddy Calow is also continuing to maintain his FAIR training.”

BRFU President Sean Field-Lament said, “Player welfare is paramount to World Rugby’s platform and here in Bermuda- the Bermuda Rugby Football Union have undertaken a program of training and awareness led by World Rugby and RAN certified trainer Shara Crunden. The courses delivered provide the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities for those involved to deliver basic First Aid In Rugby. The four local clubs have also taken responsibility to have physio support at hand during the game.

“The BRFU is extremely grateful for the unwavering support of our valued partner St. Johns Ambulance whose presence provides reassurance, an added layer of safety and timely response in the infrequent occasions of injury. Overall with the new tackle laws, the FAIR training and the response support- Bermuda rugby is in a better, safer place.”
