Get Kids From Behind Screens And Into Nature
A film designed to get children and teenagers out from behind their screens and into nature will be screened this week in Bermuda – and the director will be on hand to introduce it and to answer questions.
“Project Wild Thing” is a film about the disconnection between children and nature. It was a topic that had become deeply disturbing to award-winning director, producer and writer David Bond, inspiring him to make the film.
Observing his own children, he realised that Mother Nature needed a helping hand getting his kids to forget the distractions of the modern world and wake up to the benefits of the natural world.
Appointing himself “Marketing Director for Nature” and with the help of advertising and marketing experts, he set out to persuade apathetic consumers, and his family, of the benefits of this amazing, free, wonder-product.
In Project Wild Thing, he untangles the complex web of agendas, fears, policies and habits that create the disconnection, posing the question “If we raise a generation of children out of touch with nature, who will be the custodians of our environment in the future?”
He notes that “In the US and UK, we have the unhappiest kids in the developed world. Plenty of food, millions of TV channels, the internet, Wii, no wars to worry about – when there’s so much to be happy about, what’s going on?

“According to UNICEF, the biggest problem is that our kids are not spending enough time playing outdoors. The lure of the indoors is creating a generation that has no connection with nature… We don’t have time for nature any more.”
His award-winning film will be shown at 7:30 pm on Thursday March 28 at the Bermuda Underwater Institute and he will be there to introduce the screening and to answer questions.
Tickets are available for BUEI and BNT Members for $20 and Non-Members tickets are $25. Students are $12 for this family focused film. Visit the BUEI gift shop or the Bermuda National Trust headquarters at Waterville to purchase your ticket.
