Man Lost Overboard On Taiwanese Fishing Boat
A 30-year-old crew member was reported overboard from a Taiwanese fishing vessel located approximately 280nm northeast of Bermuda, and after a search was done, the decision was made to notify his next of kin.
A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “RCC Bermuda received an email from RCC Taipei reporting a man overboard incident from the Taiwanese Registered fishing vessel Chen Hsing No1, located approximately 280nm northeast of Bermuda.
“The 30-year-old crew member was last seen on deck at 10:50pm the previous evening.
“Bermuda Radio commenced Urgent Marine Information Broadcasts on Marine Radio VHF, SSB and Navtex. The US Coastguard RCC Norfolk, was also advised, and they subsequently established communications with the Captain of the F/v Chen Hsing No1.
“The Captain confirmed that they witnessed the crew member fall overboard wearing no lifejacket, and the man was believed to be a poor swimmer.
“The Chen Hsing No1 and a French Merchant Vessel searched the area, with Urgency Broadcasts being made by the USCG and RCC Bermuda no further sightings were received before darkness fell, and subsequently the search was called off with next of kin being notified via RCC Taipei.”
