Man Taken To KEMH After Incident At Lighthouse
A man climbed to the top of the lighthouse and threatened to jump off, and after assistance from the lighthouse keeper, a member of the public and police negotiators, the man came down “without incident” and was taken to hospital for medical assessment.
A police spokesperson said, “Around 3pm Wednesday, July 31st police officers responded to an incident at Gibbs Hill Lighthouse in Southampton.
“It appears that a local man in his 30s had climbed to the top of the lighthouse and threatened to jump off.
“The lighthouse keeper and a member of the public intervened until police officers arrived on the scene a short time later – with police negotiators eventually getting the man to come down from the lighthouse without incident.
“He was then taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for medical assessment.
“The Bermuda Police Service would like to commend the lighthouse keeper and member of the public that intervened for their prompt and brave action.”
Update: The BPS noted that the man involved in this incident has since been confirmed to be 58 years old, not in his 30s as originally stated.
