Mychel Jones Awarded Duperreault Fellowship
The Duperreault Fellowship, an endowment fund that supports the professional development of Bermuda residents working or studying in the field of substance abuse, today announced that Mrs. Mychel Jones has been chosen as the 2020 Duperreault Fellow.
Ms. Mychel Jones’ award of $64,000 will fund her studies, over four years, for a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology-Addictions offered online by Walden University. She is currently employed at the Salvation Army Harbour Light programme where she provides direct addiction services.
“We are delighted to announce Mychel as our 2020 Fellow,” said Duperreault Fellowship Chair Katherine Watson.
“During her interview, our committee members were impressed by her broad understanding of the complexity of addiction and the importance of understanding trauma, family dynamics, modes of therapy and working within cultural and societal norms in our small community.
“We are also pleased that Mychel will be able to continue working as a Jr. Addiction Counsellor in training at the Salvation Army Harbour Light Addiction programme while completing her degree, as this qualification is offered online, a development that is indicative of the progress educational institutions are making in providing a diversity of learning options to their students.”
Ms. Jones, a graduate of CedarBridge Academy, previously worked at the Nelson Bascome Centre for Substance Abuse Treatment from 2015-2019. Ms. Jones has achieved her certificate in Addictions Counselling from the Addictions Training Institute [ATI].
She has also participated in a number of addiction workshops offered by the Department of National Drug Control and is committed to enhancing her professional qualifications through higher education while continuing to serve Bermudians.
The Duperreault Fellowship was established in 2004 when a $500,000 donation contributed by insurance industry veteran Brian Duperreault and his wife, Nancy, was supported by a $1 million donation from The ACE [now Chubb] Foundation.
