Endeavour Sailing Celebrates Youth Sailors
Endeavour Community Sailing, a registered charity and non-profit that engages Bermuda’s youth through experiential learning, held two Sailabration events to recognise the accomplishments of young people who engaged in the Endeavour Graduate Summer Programme.
Endeavour welcomed 88 students from three public schools and two private schools to further advance their skills during the Endeavour Graduate Summer Programme. Students were invited based on their teamwork, willingness to learn, listening skills, overall effort and respect toward others demonstrated during their participation in the Endeavour Middle School Programme.
The Endeavour Middle School Programme engages every student during their first year of middle school in a 5-day experience focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math or STEAM education applicable through sailing which is aligned with Cambridge Curriculum learning objectives implemented in Bermuda’s public schools. Students from 3 public schools and 2 private schools engaged in virtual learning with Endeavour in May and June, and some students were not able to participate due to COVID-19.
Endeavour’s Forts in Dockyard and St. George’s were buzzing with activity over the summer as aspiring youth sailors spent a week with Endeavour to learn more about sailing fundamentals, weather patterns, and water safety while developing their skills and confidence during the Endeavour Graduate Programme.
The Endeavour Graduate Programme offers an opportunity for students who have participated in the Endeavour Middle School Programme to continue developing their skills and advance their sailing knowledge and techniques at one of Endeavour’s Forts in St. George’s and Dockyard.
Tristan Loescher, Endeavour Programme Manager, “Many of the Endeavour Graduates first started sailing during the Endeavour Middle School Programme this past school year. It is remarkable to see how much they have learned in just a short period of time with us at Endeavour this summer. We look forward to seeing them continue to learn and grow on and off the water.”
“The Endeavour Graduate Programme brings together diverse youth from across Bermuda in a way that allows young people to meet and interact with others from different backgrounds than their own. The programme is uniquely designed to ensure female and male students from different schools and parishes across the Island have the opportunity to meet each other and have fun while learning to sail,” the spokesperson said.
12-year old Duboney Hannam, Dellwood Middle School M2 student and Endeavour Graduate comments, “I would recommend the programme to other students because it’s fun and you get to experience something new.”
12-year old Arima Turner, Bermuda High School Y8 student and Endeavour Graduate comments, “I enjoyed sailing with new people because I got to make new friends. I would recommend the programme to other students. It is a good experience and they might find a new sport that they like, and make new friends.”
A total of 37 students from five schools joined together with their families to demonstrate what they learned during the summer while at Endeavour during the Sailabration festivities on Saturday, September 26 in Dockyard and Sunday, September 27 in St. George’s.
Endeavour Board Member, Dr. Melvyn Bassett joined the West Sailabration and Endeavour Board and Executive Committee Member Tom Miller joined the East Sailabration to congratulate sailors and present them with their coveted pink t-shirts, which distinguishes them as an Endeavour Graduate.
Dr. Bassett said, “Congratulations to the Endeavour Graduates on your achievements. Thank you parents for investing in your children who have shown an interest in something new. I encourage you to continue to invest in your children and wish them the very best for the future.”
