BEDC Announces eMonday Event Winners
The Bermuda Economic Development Corporation [BEDC] has announced the winners of the eMonday event, an initiative aimed at motivating residents to shop local online.
A spokesperson said, “Globally, the pandemic has forced many local businesses online, and Bermuda is no exception.
“To nurture these new digital efforts and to encourage Bermuda to continue to patronise local vendors by shopping online, the Bermuda Economic Development Corporation and the Economic Development Department [EDD] teamed up to bring back eMonday.
“eMonday, an online initiative that was first launched in 2010 during Global Entrepreneurship Week, aimed to motivate residents to shop local online. Its goal for 2020 remains the same.
“On November 30th, 2020 eMonday was launched. The event benefited both shoppers and e-tailers: the rewards included a $500 cash prize to the e-tailer that made the most individual sales during eMonday, as well as $300 and $200 for the e-tailers with the second and third highest individual sales, respectively.
“Thirty-seven e-tailers [local businesses with online stores] participated in the effort. The e-tailer with the most individual sales, winning a $500 cash prize was Andrea Fubler of Salt+Cedar.
“Rowe Spurling Paint Co., who made the second highest individual sales, graciously donated their $300 winnings to the Chewstick Foundation. Shi-Vaughn Lee of Dove & Butterfly was the lucky winner of the $200 cash prize for the third highest individual sales.
“One lucky online shopper, Sharmila Harris, won a $250 voucher for her participation. All participating shoppers were entered into a draw for the prize.
“To qualify, they had to post a picture of their e- receipt from one of the participating e-tailers on Instagram, tag BEDC [@bedcbda] and the EDD [@EconomicDevelopmentDepartment] and include the hashtags, #eMonday, #GEWBermuda, and #BEDC.”
Ms. Harris said, “I was excited to participate. eMonday was in line with my journey of shopping locally and of only buying what you need. I did just that on eMonday and ended up winning!”
Ray Jones, Director of the EDD, said, “eMonday aims to support and encourage the continuous development of secure e-commerce on the island. We were thrilled to once again partner with the BEDC to bring back this initiative that supports local businesses and encourages secure online commerce.
“eMonday encourages shopping locally online and motivates sellers and buyers alike to use the internet when transacting, especially as the island gears up for the holiday season.”
The spokesperson said, “The BEDC and the EDD are excited about what the future holds for e-commerce in Bermuda. Increasingly, local businesses are building secure websites which not only showcase their products and services but also allow online transactions, enabling both local and overseas consumers to partake of their offerings.
“The future of e-commerce in Bermuda is bright and both organisations look forward to continuing to support the development of a dynamic and secure online economy.”
