Tributes Paid To Heather Jacobs-Matthews

Heather Jacobs-Matthews Bermuda March 2021Auditor General Heather Thomas and multiple MPs have extended their condolences following the passing of Heather Jacobs-Matthews, the former Auditor General.

“A life dedicated to public service,” said the current Auditor General Heather Thomas. “Heather Jacobs-Matthews, JP, FCPA, FCA, CFE, the former Auditor General – born November 5, 1951 and passed today, March 15, 2021.

“Heather was the first black female to be appointed as Auditor General and served as Auditor General for seven years [2009 – 2016], after retiring from the Civil Service in 2007 as the Tax Commissioner.

“Prior to second stint as Tax Commissioner, Heather also served as Accountant General between 1993 and 1999 and served her first stint as Tax Commissioner between 1989 and 1993.

“She was also the Assistant Auditor and Deputy Auditor under Mr. Larry Dennis, her predecessor, between 1980 and 1989. Before then, Mrs. Jacobs-Matthews worked in the private sector from 1976, after graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting with distinction from Dalhousie University in Canada.

“Heather dedicated most of her life to the public sector and we will remember her for her tireless dedication to promote an accountable and transparent government for all citizens of Bermuda.

‘On behalf of the Office of the Auditor General, we offer our deepest condolences to Mrs. Jacobs-Matthews’ children – Suella and Damien, family, and friends,’ said Mrs. Thomas.

Tributes were also paid to Heather Jacobs-Matthews today in Parliament, with multiple MPs expressing their condolences to her family.
