Inaugural Wilfred Fray Memorial Golf Tournament
All systems are go for the inaugural Wilfred Fray Memorial Golf Tournament at Ocean View Golf Course this weekend on June 26 and 27th.
A spokesperson said, “50 years ago in June 1971, Wilfred Fray was the Low Pro in the Bermuda Open and is credited with inspiring a new breed of young golfers in Bermuda.
Chairman of Government Golf Courses Kim Swan shared, “The most extraordinary thing about Wilfred Fray was that he was a cross-handed player who hit enormous drives with a magical short game to go with hit. He was a fearless swashbuckling golfer with a style the exuded with bravado.“
“I’m also so proud & grateful for Ocean View Golf Pro Brian Morris, who is also the Bermuda PGA Tournament Chairman, for showing great initiative by organizing this event, locating a sponsor and making it a qualifying event for the Bermuda PGA. Brian is a self started who deserves credit for his efforts and attitude in the face of adversity. “
Mr Swan continued, “Unfortunately, we have the funeral of longtime Port Royal employee Cal DeRosa this weekend – and a few of us are unable to participate out of respect. But we will be there in spirit. I am so pleased the younger generation are learning about Wilfred Fray who once held the course record of 64 at Port Royal for decades”
“We expect a great deal of interest and spectators to be on hand. Tragically. Wilfred ‘Ralphie’ Fray was killed in a motorcycle accident 3 months after winning Pro Honours in The Bermuda Open. Rest In Peace Wilfred Ralphie Fray”
