Alpha Kappa Alpha Education Award Recipients

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Sigma Xi Omega Chapter selected Talliyah Butterfield from CedarBridge Academy and De’Asia Symonds from The Berkeley Institute to receive education awards for study at Bermuda College.

A spokesperson said, “Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Sigma Xi Omega Chapter have selected two outstanding candidates to receive education awards for study at Bermuda College.

“The ladies of Sigma Xi Omega Chapter engage in various community outreach projects, in addition, they host fundraising events for their Chapter’s annual education awards for a graduating public school senior.

“The awards are named after two Sigma Xi Omega Chapter charter members, Mrs. Geraldine Lambert, and Dr. Norma Jean Hendrickson. As the 2020-2021 school year has concluded, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Sigma Xi Omega Chapter, have awarded two graduating senior school students education awards.

Ms Symonds will be pursuing an Associate of Applied Science [Pre-Health Science] with a career goal of becoming a veterinarian, while Ms Butterfield is pursuing an Associate of Arts (Business Administration) with a career goal in Accountancy.

“Mrs. Geraldine Lambert believed that being a well-rounded student is a crucial element to one’s success.

“Mrs. Lambert was a lifelong educator, a firm believer in community service, and an active member as a senior soldier at The Salvation Army, until her recent passing earlier this year. As academics and a vision for service are the tools for laying a solid foundation, Miss De’Asia Symonds, a graduating student of The Berkeley Institute, was awarded the 2021 Geraldine Lambert Post-Secondary Award.

“Dr. Norma Jean Hendrickson believed that educated children were the instruments by which success would be measured. She served in various levels of education, from teacher to principal, to serving as the Assistant Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Education. Miss Talliyah Butterfield, a graduating student of CedarBridge Academy, was awarded the 2021 Dr. Norma Jean Hendrickson education award.

“Sigma Xi Omega Chapter, President Tekea Saunders, extended congratulations to the 2021 Scholarship Award Winner Miss Talliyah Butterfield [CedarBridge Academy], whilst Mrs. Deborah Jones Hunter extended congratulations on behalf of Sigma Xi Omega Chapter to Miss De’Asia Symonds [The Berkeley Institute], at their respective graduation ceremonies.

Scholarship Committee Chair, Necheeka L. Trott, stated, “We are delighted to provide a financial award to two outstanding females as they continue their educational journey at Bermuda College. We wish them much success in their studies.”

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, is the first Black Greek Sorority, founded January 15th, 1908, on the campus of Howard University. The Sorority aims to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards and provide “Service to all Mankind”.

On May 19th, 1990, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Sigma Xi Omega Chapter [registered charity #703] was chartered here by a group of members that relocated home to Bermuda after college. Since this chartering, the members of Sigma Xi Omega Chapter have been immersed in serving the community of Bermuda.
