BUEI Talks To Hold ‘Island SOS’ On April 24

April 21, 2022

The third instalment of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute’s [BUEI] eight-part Island SOS [Sustainable Ocean Strategies] series is slated to take place at BUEI on Sunday [April 24] at 4.00pm.

A spokesperson said, “This month’s island nation being highlighted is Jamaica, with a presentation by Dr. Theresa Rodriguez-Moodie, Chief Executive Officer of Jamaica Environment Trust [JET].

“Theresa will speak on JET’s three main branches of focus, which are environmental education, law and advocacy, and conservation. JET is an organization that first formed in 1991 by a group of citizens concerned about Jamaica’s natural environment. JET’s main projects include Jamaica’s longest running environmental education programme for students and teachers, the School’s Environment Programme, which has been in continuous operation since 1997.

“Their Law and Advocacy Programme works to protect Jamaica’s natural resources using the law, public participation processes, policy review and the media. JET stages and coordinates many environmental events in Jamaica, including the annual International Coastal Cleanup Day. JET’s conservation work has included monitoring of sea turtle nesting and the patrol management of the Pedro Bank fish sanctuary.

“Jamaica’s irregular coastline is 795 km long and has diverse ecosystems including sandy beaches, rocky shores, estuaries, wetlands, seagrass beds and coral reefs. The majority of living marine resources are found on the island shelf and nine oceanic banks which cover an area of 4,170 sq. km. The authorities have recognised the tremendous significance and potential of the environment and have designated some of the more “fertile” areas as “protected”. Jamaica faces a similar challenge to Bermuda in that a large portion of its annual revenue comes from tourism, but it is this same tourism that directly impacts the surrounding environment.”

“In 1620 the Bermuda Assembly passed an act against the killing of sea turtles in Bermuda, this may well be one of the first written conservation legislation in the Western-Hemisphere. While Bermuda’s waters provide many opportunities for hands on environmental protection and natural science research, careers in ocean conservation can also be achieved through law and advocacy by providing appropriate safeguarding measures for a thriving eco-system. Ocean conservation is always at the forefront of what we do here at BUEI, it is our hope that these talks resonate with individuals in our community and inspire new ways to protect and appreciate our seas.” said Karla Lacey, BUEI CEO.

“Each BUEI Talk: ‘Island SOS’ presentation focuses on a different island and topic, covering subject matters ranging from beach management master planning, and zero waste event management to balancing community and cultural interests. The entire series has been generously sponsored by Chubb,” a spokesperson said.

“BUEI Talks take place in front of a live audience in BUEI’s Tradewinds Auditorium, with overseas guests presenting online in real time. Each talk allows interactive Q&A between the presenter and the audience. Scheduled monthly from February through September, other islands to be featured include Barbados, Bahamas, Isle of Man and Tobago. Tickets to each BUEI Talks: Island SOS presentation are $15 for members and $20 for non-members. Email info@buei.bm, or call BUEI’s Ocean Gift Shop at 294-0204 to reserve a space.”
