Bermuda Students Win Awards At Albert College
The Albert College boarding school in Canada celebrated their graduation on Saturday and recognized the Class of 2022, which includes Bermudians Lara Backeberg, Thomas Evans, Jessica Mello and Cainan Tucker – all of whom won awards.
A spokesperson said, “Forty-one students representing seven countries graduated from Albert College in Canada on Saturday, including four students from Bermuda. Albert College is Canada’s oldest co-educational boarding and day high school located in Belleville, Ontario along the shores of Lake Ontario between Toronto and Ottawa.
“Albert College celebrated 165 years of graduates on Saturday and recognized the Class of 2022 including Bermuda’s own; Lara Backeberg of Hamilton, Thomas Evans of Paget, Jessica Mello from Warwick, and Cainan Tucker of St. Davids.
“Lara Backeberg attended Albert College for three years, held the leadership role of House League Prefect this year. Lara was the recipient of the Douglas Jodoin Scholarship for academics and athletics and the H.B. Simpson Award for proficiency in liberal arts. She also received of the Class of ’66 Trophy for most outstanding female athlete and the Donald G. Williams Award. Lara is an Albert College Scholar having achieved an academic average of over 90 percent in six Grade 12 subjects Next year, Lara will be attending the University of Loughborough, England, for Architecture.
“Thomas Evans has attended Albert College for three years and held the leadership role of Health and Wellness Prefect this year. He received awards in English and vocal music. He was also the recipient of the Gordon Ford Music Award and the Sidney Watson ’38 Memorial Award for History. Thomas was also the recipient of the McKenzie Roberts Academic Achievement Award and the Albert College Academic Award for demonstrating exemplary learning skills while enhancing the academic program. Thomas is an Albert College Scholar having achieved an academic average of over 90 percent in six Grade 12 subjects. In the fall, he will attend the University of Lancaster to pursue a Bachelor of Law with Politics.
“Jessica Mello has attended Albert College for two years and served on the Graduating Class Executive Committee as VP Finance and was the Bishop House Captain for two years. Jessica played the position of goalie on both the Girls Field Hockey and Girls Lacrosse teams, where she was the recipient of the Coach’s award. She was a member of the Albert College Choir and the Camp Committee. Jessica is an Albert College Scholar having achieved an academic average of over 90 percent in six Grade 12 subjects. In the fall, Jessica will be attending the University of Guelph pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology and Conservation.
“Cainan Tucker has attended Albert College for five years. Cainan’s most memorable experiences at Albert include attending camp and performing in this year’s AC Superstar talent show night. Cainan was a member of the school band, camp committee, received a Senior Arts and Activities ‘A’ Pin and was the recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award. Cainan plans to attend Wilfred Laurier University, Waterloo Campus, to pursue a Bachelor of Arts.”
