PGA Golf Local Qualifier Set For October
The Local Qualifier for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship and Butterfield Bermuda APGA Championship will take place on October 4 and October 5, 2022.
A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Golf Association [BGA], Bermuda Professional Golfers’ Association [BPGA], and tournament officials are pleased to announce the dates of the Local Qualifier for this year’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship. The pre-tournament qualifying competition will take place Tuesday, October 4 and Wednesday, October 5 at Port Royal Golf Course.
“The 36-hole individual stroke-play event is open to local Bermudian professional and amateur players.
“Three Bermudian golfers will be offered qualifying spots to compete in Bermuda’s fourth annual PGA TOUR event, which falls this October 27 to 30 at its host location, Port Royal Golf Course, Southampton, Bermuda. Further to these three exemption spots into the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, those who place fourth, fifth and sixth will be granted exemption spots into the Butterfield Bermuda APGA Championship which will be held this October 11 and 12 at Port Royal Golf Course.
“These individuals will also be reserve alternatives for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship field. Seventh, eighth and ninth placers will be reserve alternatives for the Butterfield Bermuda APGA Championship.”
BGA President Craig Brown said, “The Butterfield Bermuda Championship continues to give local golf an opportunity to grow and develop the game. We are excited this year to see an additional event with the APGA tournament providing more exposure in high-level competition.”
The spokesperson said, “The 2021 Local Qualifier saw Michael Sims, Camiko Smith, Chaka DeSilva and Damian Palanyandi Qualify to enter the field for the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. For Michael Sims, a third consecutive year of doing so. Whilst all four played exceptionally well, Michael Sims showed his poise, carding two-over par 144 to earn his third start in the PGA TOUR event.
“The top finishing Bermudian, winning by four strokes, had the low round of the day with a second straight one-over par 72. Camiko Smith was not far behind shooting +6 over par to take the second spot. Following Camiko; Chaka Desilva at +8 over par with Damian Palanyandi claiming the fourth and final exemption spot at +9 over par.
“Entries will soon open to professional golfers, amateur golfers, and applicants for reinstatement. Eligibility to compete in the Butterfield Bermuda Championship Local Qualifier requires participants to meet the following criteria:
- 1. Players must possess Bermudian status.
- 2. Players must be in good standing with the BGA and BPGA and not subject to any disciplinary process or sanction of either association
- 3. Amateurs and applicants for reinstatement must have an up-to-date handicap index, not exceeding 1.4, under the World Handicap System
- Note: A player’s scoring record may not include any scores from before October 1, 2021.
“Full details of eligibility requirements, accommodation, and conditions of competition related to conducting the tournament under COVID-19 requirements will be available at the time of registration. Entries officially open Monday, September 12.
