February 20, 2023

[Updated with photos] On Sunday, the Bermuda Bicycle Association presented cycling’s 2022 Awards at their annual awards ceremony at Boundary Sports Bar & Grill Restaurant, Southampton.

President Peter Dunne announced Kaden Hopkins and Caitlin Conyers as Male and Female Riders of the Year based on their local and international performances in 2022.

Mr Dunne was excited to speak about the international performances of Bermuda riders who are gaining the attention of teams and officials around the cycling world, saying: “If you look at Hopkins’ results in the Commonwealth Games in England, where he was the top finishing amateur in the time trial and the road race was in a breakaway in the road with some of the World’s Best riders, with Bermuda’s team having an unprecedented effort where all three riders finished the road race [Hopkins, White, Narraway] and Hopkins’ World Championships time trial results in Australia, Bermuda has raised eyebrows in the world of cycling.”

Mr Dunne added, “that this year’s award winners were not alone, with Conor White, Nicholas Narraway, Liam Flannery, Alexander Miller, Caitlin Conyers, Gabby Arnold and Robin Horsfield all racing overseas at extremely high levels.”

The spokesperson said, “Looking to follow in the footsteps of Conyers, who had been training and racing in Spain this year, Charlotte Millington was announced as the 2022 Junior Rider of the Year after an impressive season that saw her pitted against the Island’s senior women, winning the Bermuda National Junior titles as well as international gold medals at the Junior Caribbean Championships along with fellow junior Annabelle Miller. Cameron Morris was voted Most Improved Junior after a strong year in road and mountain bike events. In addition, Matthew Ringer was a deserved and popular Most Improved Adult Rider Award winner.”

Mr Dunne explained “that cyclists’ performances are only possible with the dedicated work of others in the sport”.

The spokesperson said, “The BBA recognised some of those roles with the Club Person of the Year Award presented to Dominique Mayho, a top cyclist in his own right, for his work in helping develop the sport highlighting Mayho’s management of the Commonwealth Games team, amongst other volunteer duties. In addition, Race Organiser of the Year was presented to Jennifer Lightbourne, and Race Official of the Year went to Charlie Thresh.

“While not a BBA award, Deborah Titterton Narraway, representing the Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, announced the MOvember Bermuda Sportsmanship award winner. This award is given annually to the sports team or club that raises the most funds in November, supporting men’s cancer initiatives in Bermuda. In 2022 this honour was won by the BRCC Cycling Team for their community MOvember Bermuda™ ride they organised, making it the third year in a row they have won this trophy.

“Overall, the future of cycling is looking bright, and the Bermuda Bicycle Association wishes to thank their riders, teams, officials, sponsors and supporters for a fantastic 2022.”
