UK Parliament: Q&A On Spy Balloons & Airspace
“The UK has a credible cross-domain, multi-layered capability to counter any threat to UK airspace,” the British Minister for the Armed Forces said in response to a question about the UK’s ability to handle spy balloons which enter the UK or Overseas Territories airspace.
During the British Parliament’s session yesterday [Feb 21] , Shadow Minister Transport Tan Dhesi asked the Secretary of State for Defence, “What assessment he has made of the UK’s ability to [a] promptly detect, [b] continually track and [c] destroy high altitude spy balloons or similar which enter UK or UK overseas territories.”
In response, Minister of State, Ministry of Defence, Minister for the Armed Forces, James Heappey referred him to answers provided on February 14th to Parliamentary Questions at which time he said, “The UK has a credible cross-domain, multi-layered capability to counter any threat to UK airspace.”
Bermuda — which as a tiny island is likely very low, or not even on, the list of places any nation wishes to ‘spy’ on from the air – is a British Overseas Territory, so the UK is responsible for our defence.
