The 18th Annual KPMG Senior School Investment Challenge ceremony was held at City Hall on May 3, 2023. The investment challenge for Bermuda High Schools is a competition that fosters and promotes financial literacy while also developing analytical skills in our high school students.
The challenge involves teams of students using an online investment platform called “Stock Trak” to invest a $100,000 hypothetical into various stocks, of ten [10] securities at a time.
Throughout the competition, CedarBridge Academy teams StockXers: Chelsea Minors and Simar Taravas-Place, and De Inside Traders: Eden Furbert, Jamir Hatherley, J’Naz Richards, Sydney Santos, Margarida Simas, and Daetona Simmons made informed investment decisions while tracking their financial portfolio live. Their investment portfolio is evaluated at the end of the challenge. StockXer, the winning team, gained more than 11%, placing them first out of eight teams and over sixty [60] participants. “I am extremely proud of our students of excellence for rising to the challenge and persevering,” said Mrs. Latoya Francis, Instructional Leader for STEM and Personal Finance Teacher, who entered the CedarBridge Academy teams in the competition.
“Representing CedarBridge Academy was a great feeling because I don’t hear of many initiatives and opportunities like the KMPG Investment Challenge,” says Chelsea from StockXer. Therefore, when Mrs. Francis mentioned the investment challenge, I decided to participate because I learned how to trade stocks when I was younger but never had the opportunity to put my knowledge to the test. So, when I finally got the opportunity to invest in stocks while representing my school, I was overjoyed. It feels amazing to win because I worked on it for almost a year. I’m happy because I went into this with the confidence I was going to win, and to actually win is an awesome feeling.”
The KPMG Investment Challenge provides our students with financial knowledge along with skills linked to finance and investments, which will benefit them in their future careers and personal lives. It also allows our students to collaborate with business partners in the financial industry while learning about various career paths.
