Caitlin Conyers will take to the start line for the elite women’s individual time-trial at the UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, today [August 10].

Conyers admits she has maintained a low profile in the build-up to the event, having missed the championships two years ago because of a positive Covid-19 test.

The 33-year-old also suffered the same fate at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last summer, testing positive for the virus in the days leading up to her first race.

“I’ve been so scared to post anything about this World Championships for fear of it all falling apart again,” Conyers wrote on Facebook yesterday.

“After all of the work that goes into preparing for these events, mentally and physically, one of the biggest heartbreaks is to not make it to the start line, especially when you don’t know if you’ll ever get another chance at it.”

Conyers, who is expected to compete in the 154.1-kilometre road race in Loch Lomond on Sunday, said she has been made to feel at home since arriving in Scotland more than a week ago,

“But I’m here. I’m healthy and happy and feeling strong. I showed up a week ago not knowing anyone in Scotland, and I’ll leave with a list of people I’ll never forget.

“People that have just met me but believe in me and been willing to open their homes and cars and up-ended their life for a week to be there for me. Words can’t express how grateful I am.”

“Just getting to the start line will be a win, and then I’ll tuck my head and pedal my legs as hard as I can for 36km, wearing the best kit in the world.”
