Tomorrow, August 12, is UN International Youth Day. Its observances began in 2000, and it aims to recognize the input that young people make in education, community development, environmental awareness and social advocacy.

A Government spokesperson said, “This year, the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Sen. Owen Darrell is eager to observe the day, highlighting the work that his Ministry has done to empower Bermuda’s young people in the areas of the arts, athletic excellence and social and environmental change.

Minister Darrell said, “This year’s theme for International Youth Day speaks to creating a sustainable world.

“Our belief is that sustainability for our young people involves every aspect of their lives, this includes their safety, their health and their place in the community.

“A sustainable future is one that allows our youth to be included in the conversations and decisions made that impact their lives. It also means supporting and empowering them in their career goals and community pursuits, by helping to enhance their knowledge, skills and abilities needed to thrive and succeed in a changing world and environment.”

A spokesperson said, “Minister Darrell took the opportunity to shine a spotlight on some of the milestones that the Ministry has made with Bermuda’s young people by equipping them with the skills and support to navigate an evolving landscape.

“He noted the Department of Culture’s support for Bermuda’s young talent and artists by providing them with a platform to showcase their works. He also noted the Department’s ongoing funding support to assist our young artists and creatives.

“The Minister also highlighted the important work being done with the National Youth Policy and the Working Group, commending their dedication to championing the government’s plan to support, empower and engage Bermuda’s young people.

“The Minister notes that key accomplishments of the National Youth Policy Working Group are chronicled in the 2023 Progress Report.

“And the Minister celebrated the recent success of Bermuda’s young athletes who are inspiring the entire island with their performances on the global and local stage. He pointed out that in order for Bermuda’s athletes to compete with their global peers more investment must be made.”

Minister Darrell concluded, “So as we reflect on International Youth Day, Bermuda should be extremely proud of the strides and contributions our young people are making in our community.

“The Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport remains committed to strengthening and preserving our young people. They are at the forefront of shaping our future and they are the ones who will create a pathway to sustainability for all.”
