Nicholas Christopher To Star As Sweeney Todd
Bermudian actor Nicholas Christopher will step into the title role in the Broadway musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street after superstar singer Josh Groban tested positive for Covid-19.
Understudy Christopher, who usually appears as rival barber Adolfo Pirelli, will play the Victorian villain barber in Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s landmark musical.
Groban wrote on Instagram: “Tested positive today and will be resting hard to get well and back on stage ASAP. If you have tickets, I assure you the show is in brilliant hands with Nicholas Christopher, and I’m grateful to him and the entire cast. I’ll see you again very soon!”
The Broadway show has the distinction of having two Bermudians in it, as the ensemble cast includes Nicholas’s brother Jonathan Christopher; the talented brothers are the sons of Ed Christopher, the Hamilton town crier.
The revival of the musical, which premiered on Broadway in 1979, opened in March.
