Kamau Leverock On Dream Start, Cricket, More

Kamau Leverock said the Bermuda national cricket team are not getting carried away despite their “dream start” to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier.
Bermuda took a giant leap towards securing a spot at the T20 Cricket World Cup next summer after defeating much-fancied Canada by 86 runs on Saturday before following up with a seven-wicket win over Panama on Sunday.
The team returns to action against the Cayman Islands at the North Field, National Sports Centre, today looking to finish the first round of fixtures with a perfect record.
“It’s been a dream start,” Leverock told Bernews. “Everyone’s been working hard, and we’re reaping the rewards.
“No one is getting carried away. We’re still taking it one game at a time. It’s very refreshing to see how everyone is staying focused.
“The plan is not to look too far ahead and ensure we’re doing the basics properly.”
Despite making a flying start to the double round-robin tournament, Leverock believes there is plenty more to come from Bermuda as they aim to reach the biggest stage in men’s T20 cricket.
“Before the game against Canada, Delray [Rawlins] said there’s plenty of unlocked potential within the team,” the all-rounder said.
“We still aren’t playing to our full potential, but that win has given us plenty of confidence.
“Things can change quickly in T20, but we have the personnel to adapt to any situation and come out on top.
“We’ve started hot, which is what you want. We didn’t want to be warming up midway through the tournament.”
Bermuda’s top batters have been in fine form in the opening two matches, with Leverock scoring 83 and Rawlins 66 against Canada and Tre Manders guiding them to victory over Panama with 55 not out.
“All of our batters are in good nick,” Leverock said. “The weekend before the tournament, everyone scored runs in domestic cricket.
“Dominic Sabir hasn’t batted much in the tournament yet, but he’s been in form all season, as has Zeko Burgess.
“We bat right done to Sinclair Smith at number ten. It makes you feel very secure knowing everyone in the team has the ability.”
With excitement building on the island after Bermuda’s impressive start, Leverock has urged the team’s supporters to play a crucial role over the next four matches.
“Fans in Bermuda can sometimes be quite harsh, but we can feel they’re right behind us and can give us the boost we need,” he added. “It’s a wonderful feeling.”
