Marine Search After Empty Liferaft Found
The Celebrity Silhouette cruise ship saw a liferaft 290 nautical miles northeast from Bermuda, and the ship and a U.S. Coast Guard C130 aircraft conducted a search of the area to ensure no vessels were in distress.
A Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre spokesperson said, “Sunday 29th October, 3:25pm – Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre, was advised by email from the Cruise Ship Celebrity Silhouette, that they had sighted an inflated liferaft, at 2:20pm approximately 290 nautical miles northeast from Bermuda.
“Unfortunately, the cruise ship had continued on passage without satisfying further questions from BMOC and the US Coast Guard who were also advised of this sighting. The Celebrity Silhouette was tasked to return to the position of the liferaft, to ensure no persons were observed in distress, the USCG also tasked a C130 aircraft to conduct a search of the area to ensure no vessels were in distress.
“Following subsequent confirmation from Celebrity Silhouette that no persons were in the liferaft and the C130 search did not observe any signs of distress, subsequent searches were stood down. The Celebrity Silhouette arrived in Bermuda the next day, Monday 30th October as scheduled.”
