LeiLanni Nesbeth has taken the first stride in her professional football career after being picked by the Chicago Red Stars in the National Women’s Soccer League [NWSL] Draft yesterday [January 12].
The Bermuda national team player was named the tenth pick in the first round of the draft, which was held at the Anaheim Convention Centre in Anaheim, California.
Nesbeth was the first non-American to be selected in the draft, which featured four rounds with up to 56 players chosen by the 14 teams in the NWSL.
“Signed, sealed, and delivered,” Nesbeth wrote on Instagram yesterday.
The 22-year-old ended her college career on a high by winning the NCAA Championship title, helping Florida State University [FSU] defeat Stanford University 5-1 in the showpiece final in Cary, North Carolina, last month.
In a recent interview with Bernews, the attacking midfielder said she was exploring her options in Europe and the NWSL.
“It’s super-exciting to see how the women’s game is growing. Every year, there seems to be drastic improvements in the NWSL and Europe.”
Nesbeth helped Bermuda win the gold medal at the NatWest International Island Games in Guernsey, the Channel Islands, last summer.
The Red Stars wrote on Instagram yesterday: “Nesbeth is from Florida State, and in the 2023 season, she started in 21 games, scored two goals, and added five assists in 1,617 minutes of play.
“She was a leader in the midfield and helped FSU record 14 shutouts in 23 games. Welcome.”
