Cal Simons, the Bermuda Pacers Track Club head coach, believes the Skyport Magic Mile is going from strength to strength after another successful event at the Flora Duffy Stadium.
The annual race for runners aged 4 to 15 attracted more than 800 entries on March 2, with Simons adding that organisers Pacers could not have been happier with how the day unfolded.
“The event went extremely well,” Simons told Bernews. “It was a great day. The kids and parents had a wonderful time.
“We were delighted to get more than 800 entries. It was a good day at the office!
“Pacers were delighted with the registration and support from the public. We had more than 60 volunteers turn out to help!”
Prize donations worth $200 were awarded to schools with the most entries in the preschool and primary school [private and public] categories.
Warwick Academy won the preschool and primary school [private] prize, while West Pembroke Primary had the most participants in the primary school [public] division.
Simons, who has become somewhat of a figurehead for Pacers, said the One Comm Family Zone and SA Kids’ Village proved a huge hit with the families throughout the day.
The Family Zone featured face painting, caricature portraits by local artist Carlos Santana, free cotton candy, and a giveaway; meanwhile, the Kids’ Village included an assortment of bouncy castle experiences, including an obstacle course and climbing wall.
“The Kids Zone and Family Zone came off, which was pleasing to see,” Simons said. “They were packed. It was fantastic.”
“I’m sure Skyport will have ideas on how to grow the event as we speak!”
Aaron Adderley, the Skyport president, also lauded the success of the ever-popular event.
“We are delighted with the success of one of our signature, youth-focused community partnerships.
“Supporting Pacers’ work in developing grassroots athletic talent, introducing nearly a thousand of our young people to the excitement, discipline, and opportunities of track and field has been a rewarding exercise for the company and the scores of Skyport volunteers that have helped make this event a reality year after year.”
He continued: “We are proud to have elevated the experience for the entire community and salute our partner sponsors whose generous support contributed to an enhanced track event from official timing to family-friendly entertainment and experiences.”
