Bermuda Hosts Corrections Instructor Training
“The success of this training course reflects Bermuda’s commitment to excellence and leadership in corrections training internationally,” said Minister of National Security Michael Weeks, following a Department of Corrections [DOC] training course for instructors from across the region.
A Government spokesperson said, “Corrections instructors from Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and Montserrat attended this three-week course from 1 April to 19 April at the department’s CW Davis Training Centre and a local dojo in Warwick.
“The UK’s Ministry of Justice Overseas Territories Prison Programme organised the training. Gary Jenkins and Razvan Chirica, instructors with the UK’s National Tactical Response Group [NTRG], a specialist unit of His Majesty’s Prison Service, delivered the class.
“The course enhanced each participant’s capabilities. These newly qualified instructors are now equipped to deliver the latest use of force syllabus to corrections staff within their respective territories, ensuring a uniform standard of training that promotes safety and professionalism.”
Minister Weeks added, “By hosting and participating in such high-level training, we demonstrate our dedication to equipping our officers with the necessary skills to perform their duties effectively and safely.
“This is important for promoting a secure environment within our correctional facilities and for the community at large.”
Meanwhile, Commissioner of Corrections Keeva Joell-Benjamin stated, “This training underscores the Department of Corrections’ dedication to the continuous professional development of its staff, emphasising the importance of being prepared to manage diverse situations encountered during their duties.
“The DOC extends its gratitude to the local dojo owner for their support and to all involved in delivering this training experience.”
The Government spokesperson said, “The Department of Corrections remains focused on ongoing development and maintaining high standards to ensure the safety and security of both staff and inmates.”
