Several of the island’s up and comping boxers showcased their skills in the second Bermuda Boxing Federation Development League tournament at Whitney Institute on Saturday [May 4].
In the exhibition bouts, Yannik Dill, of Controversy Boxing Gym [CBG], fought Kallan Todd, of the Bermuda Sanshou Association [BSA], Enzi Johnstone faced BSA team-mate Muryah Swan; Tristan Burgess [BSA] took on Legai Tucker, of Fresh and Hungry Boxing Gym; Bruce Perinchief [CBG] met Che Durham [BSA]; Krista Dyer [BSA] fought Ryah Symonds [BSA]; Enzi Johnstone faced BSA team-mate Geraldine Sidders; and Tristan Trott [BSA] fought Yu’udai Trott [BSA].
Meanwhile in the sanctioned contests, Mustafa Abdul-Jabbar [CBG] beat Jonathan Trott [BSA]; his brother Musa Abdul-Jabbar [CBG] defeated Zane Furbert [F&H]; Cole Durham [BSA] beat Jahnia Trott [CBG]; and Jaiden Wilson beat CBG team-mate Qeir Ypaeraguire.
Nathan Dill, the Bermuda Boxing Federation president, believes the Development League events are helping unify the local boxing community.
“The highlight of the event for me was witnessing the relationships between the young boxers and the coaches,” Dill told Bernews.
“They’re a lot more than just coaches; they’re parents, teachers, psychiatrists, councillors, and mentors. They’re involved in these kids’ lives and that was impressive to see.
“We were two judges short because two of our judges just couldn’t commit to the event, but we had assistance from within the boxing community.
“We were able to pull people into role and everyone stepped up.”
The BBF hopes to hold Development League tournaments, supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Sport, every two or three months and build a national team of boys and girls to represent the island overseas.
Among the event’s sponsors were KJ Installs and Accurate Pest Control.
